Questions about taxes and total sale price

Hey guys.

I've been looking at the posting below* and a few things have come up that I'm wondering about as it affect my upcoming purchase:

Out the door price

This buyer was charged sales tax on the destination charge, extended warranty and dealers fee. Is that correct? I could sort of see a sales tax on the extended warranty, but somehow I didn't think the Destination charge and dealers fee were subject to sales tax. Anyone know one way or the other?

Interestingly, they also seemed to have overcharged this particular buyer by $2.84 in sales tax( 6.5% of $20,264.00 is $1,317.16, not $1,320.00). I know, I know it's not a huge deal, but to me, it just reinforces my distrust of car dealers in general. I'm curious as to why the "rounding".

Lastly, as a Florida buyer myself, I'm curious about this:
I am buying my car in Sarasota (which seems to have a 7% sale tax), but I live in Lee Co, which has a 6% sales tax. For my own upcoming purchase, this translates to a $134.90 DIFFERENCE going from the 6% to 7% sales tax.
I've checked around on Florida's DMV website, but I can't seem to find an answer. I plan to ask the dealer I am buying from, but somehow I don't feel the dealers interests are necessarily in alignment with mine. I don't mean this as a bash.

Can anyone look at their invoice and see how it compares-as far as what is subject to sales tax and what is not? And... anyone know-within the same state-what sales tax you're subject to- that of your resident county or the county you're purchasing in?

Inquiring minds want to know!

In my experience, sales or use tax is charged on everything but fees charged by the state, and the tax rate is that of the county where you take delivery. In other words the location of the dealer. If you buy out of state you can defer the tax to the location/state where you register the vehicle.

Sales tax rules vary by state. In California shipping and dealer fees are considered part of the price of the goods, so sales tax applies. Tax is dependent on where one takes possession of goods, in California it does not matter where you live, its where you buy that determines the sales tax. However if I buy a car in Oregon with no sales tax, then register it within 90 days in California a "use tax" in the same amount as the sales tax is collected by the DMV. Register your car after 90 days after purchase in Oregon, no use tax is due. That's a nice loophole. Check with your state sales tax authority for particulars in your state.

Mitspowered..here in Texas the auto sales tax is a State wide single rate. If your FL is by county and I suspect you are required to register your car in your county then the Dealer is doing the registration for you and probably should be figuring the tax on your county..This is simple a logic guess... As suggested surf your state gov web sites and see if the question is in one of the FAG pages on the DMV or similar site
