Sounds like a scam!

My bother in law just called to say his dealer called out of the blue to offer him an orphan.

I asked him how they new how to contact him? HMMMM???? I'm thinking the dealership was notified by the MFG his car is in the final stages of build. Instead of telling him that they offered him an orphan hoping he would take it with all the added BS. Then they would have his orphan to jack up and sell. The dealership was from Michigan. I'm guessing Southfield cause he lives just north of Detroit.

There are some people out there that preach all orphans should go to current reservation holders, mostly on another site I wont go back to because those arguments dominate the posts. Nobody said your brother in law had to take the offer, but is nice to be asked if you are on the list.

" asked him how they new how to contact him?" probably because once he's 'configured', his info is passed on the his smart center. maybe the 'orphan' was similar to the one he has or order OR he was next in line on their 'orphan list' to be called. why does EVERYTHING have to be a conspiracy?

as for the motive, not really sure what the dealership had to gain here. what difference is there if they sell a 'jacked up' one to your brother or sell it to someone else? can't say i see the logic there.

Only one dealership in Michigan - Headquarters in Bloomfield. Doubt if a scam...they called me too before mine came in and the one they offered me was not loaded - I waited for mine, but these people don't need to run scams.

my dealer call me a couple months before mine was delivered as well even though I never expressed an interest in a orphan...just a common courtesy I suppuse.

(they already know how many have b****ed about waiting so long!)

Point is he was NOt on an orphan list. He has never made contact with the dealership.
The only way they could have known anything about him is from the MFG contacting them. The only reason the MFG would contact the dealer about an individual would be to notify the dealer about the status of customers car. To call him out of the blue and offer him an orphan witch BTW was loaded up with extras. The benefit?
If he were to take the offered orphan they then would have his car to do the same thing with because it then would become an orphan.

It could be a courtesy. Before crying foul, your brother should call and find out, don't you think?

I would assume that if that will be his dealer for delivery, they would already have a list from smart.

After waiting a year, and going to get my car in about a week, I would've been glad to have had the dealer call me, and have a vehicle simular to the one I wanted, I woul've accepted a different color, but not the options. I love that my car is decked out to the max. The dealer didn't have to tack on anything to jack up the price, I did all that on my own. I always wanted to buy the car, and pick all the options I wanted. This car allows me to do it. I didn't want later to say, maybe I should've added.... Or I wish I would've gotten.... So I put a lot of thought into it, and decided to get what I wanted. I could see if you wanted to stay under $15,000, you wouldn't want to add much and you wouldn't want all the dealer options. But if price isn't a problem, you could deck out the Smart Passion Coupe at easily $20,000.
