2 quick things.... why are you going through Smarts Financing... their rates are ridiculous for a new car. Find any local credit union... stick 100 bucks in an account and you will probably get approved at a rate in the 6% area. (I got 6.2% last week)
I am a member of our credit union. Thats where our smart car savings is. We were denied last time by our credit union but hope they will finance it. Makes things faster when I pick up too! Honestly, if its a high rate or no smart, well, I have waited too long not to take it home.
Edit: Smart financing denied us too last time, but the MB financing team didnt ask how much we had saved either. They didnt ask much. RR is said to work harder for people's business. I let them know what happened and I am supposed to get a call from their head financing mgr.
I've found it in my best interest to establish a rapport with the loan officer. In the past, way far back before I had any sort of credit score they went off of a character reference - pretty much it was did they think I was a trustworthy character or not. Since it was a small town yet still a credit union I got the loan. It was a stepping stone in establishing credit. Then over the years I got lots of little signature loans but paid them off quick - still enough time to let them make a little $$ off of me though.
Good luck on getting rid of the bike. eBay is sometimes good, sometimes not.

We are going to call the credit union main office and speak with the loan officer there. What should we do? Small talk?

Mine was always to ask valid questions, unfortunately your credit union is most likely much bigger than the branch I got my start from. It was small talk but I did have a reason to be there in the first place. Your reason could be just your concern alone for getting the loan, questions like what do you "need" to do make sure you get the loan and at an acceptable rate too.
Remember - they are busy, but you are also their customer and want to give them your business.
Yea, ebay is world wide, but I dont think someone would buy from outside the country and ship it. I have tried listing in more than one area in CL and it either wont let me, or gets flagged down.
The guy who bought my bike is from Florida.
If someone would buy from outside the country is most likely a scam.
I wanted to update those following the drama that is our financial situation. I have been trying to sell my motorcycle for months now. Its worth at least $3000 but it was in a fender bender and then the stock market crashed. I really wanted $2000 and after much frustration, a person in florida agreed to pay $900-$100 less than it costs us a year ago. But that puts us right in lone to have at least $4000 down on our smart, which the dealer said because of that, I should get a loan. That dosnt mean we can celebrate yet, but its one more step!
Now, I just have to wait on the money to come in and my DDE to come back...
Dont feel bad I had to sell my Evolution 8 and my Mitsubishi Montero less than I wanted to just to get rid of them and so I can get approved for a loan by putting a big down pmt. I put down $5000 CASH and I was able to get approved adn my score at the time was only a 525. The more cash you can put down the better but not over $7500 for too much is not good either because banks want to know they can make money off you as well.

Awesome! That gives us some really good hope! Keep the good vibes coming!
I got my loan for the smart with no money down (not counting that $99.00 deposit), and it was through the MB Finance officer at the dealership. And that's after their first proposal didn't win my approval due to a higher interest rate. I gave them my credit union (CU) proposal and they matched it to about a difference of $5.00 per month over the CU numbers. I had about $1000.00 in hand just in case, but decided that I'd just keep the cash and borrow all. Of course, I only bought a a/c pure with no radio...
