When should I expect to get mine or configure?

I reserved my Fortwo on July 5th, 2008, and my reservation number is 643411647 and I live in the Columbus, Ohio area. When should I expect to get the e-mail about configuring my Fortwo and even taking delivery of my Fortwo? Will it be a '09 model or '10?

hope you have a really comfy Lazy-Boy recliner, 'cause you're gonna be kickin' back and WAITING for some time.

just from my personal experience so far, i reserved on March 16 2008 and compared with the experience of others here in Indiana, i don't expect to CONFIGURE until October or November. my DDE (Delivery Date Estimator) says i should have my smart around July-Sept 2009 and that will be, of course, a 2009 model.

'if' production doesn't increase somehow soon, you could be waiting 18-22 months for you smart. with China joining the mix in 2009, the wait time can only increase without the addition of another plant......somewhere.

the best advice i could give is FORGET ABOUT IT! you've placed your reservation, no get on with your life. don't get suckered into this forum as i did. not good for anyone until AFTER you've taken delivery.

drop by your smart center from time to time to 'check in' and get your name on their orphan list if you want to get one sooner.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your 'smart experience'!

Mensa42-

Unfortunately, I don't have any Lazy-Boy branded anything in my home, but if I did.. you can bet I'd be kickin' back in it.

The wait I have for my car doesn't bother me. ACTUALLY, your reply allows me for time than I thought to get out of debt (paying off 6 or so credit cards, and paying off my current car loan.. on a 1998 VW New Beetle).

I stay around the forum to meet Smart owners and go to Smart car events. That's why I stick around.. to make new friends.

I won't be placing myself on the orphan list, because I refuse to buy a car that is exactly like the one I've ordered. I'd rather just wait my place in line.

Thanks for your reply!

Ryan

Good Attitude! I don't have mine yet, but reading these forums gives you lots of information on all the problems with the 08 models from buyers. So what this forum is good for is finding out how to get around a funny thing the car does incase it happens to you. You also get to see the cool after market stuff that you might toss onto your car when you get it. Keeps you informed on what is going on.

I configured 13 months and 10 days after I reserved (July 26, 2007). I think my wait was on the loooong side of normal. DDE says Dec 08-Feb 09

Reserved in January 08 configured September 08 so it was an 8 month wait to get on deck. DDE says October 08-December 08 delivery. Going to finally get that cabrio! Patience is a virtue.

I reserved in July 08 and have a 1668, I was told by Riverside ,Smart its 14 months. I feel that it would be closer to 11 months, due to:

1. World wide reccession, cuts back world wide auto sales both here and in Europe and will cause higher than normal cancellations.

2. In Europe the Smart fortwo 450 experienced slow sales that almost caused Daimler Benz to shut down Hambach, until restructuring and a new 451 saved the plant, Smart demand will slow down in Europe soon.

3. There are alternatives to the 451 in Europe, The Toyota IQ and Aygo, also the Ford Ka and many others with back seats.

4. Mercedes Benz uses all Smart sales to get EPA mileage credits, and with the dollar getting strong, they will give the US a bigger share, plus Penske said he will lobby for 40,000 units.

I won't be doing any custom work to my Smart.. I'll be using all my custom money on my New Beetle to turn it into a show car. I just need a daily driver while I turn my New Beetle into a show car.. and that's what I plan to use my Fortwo for.
