Yes, I can't remember the thread either; but it was a single damaged panel and the dealership had to order one rather than take one off a demo? or something like that. Damn memory won't work!!

I didn't select this option when I configured my car. Now, I kinda wish I had. Surely, I can still get it after delivery ... but, how much can I expect to pay for it initially. And, is there a periodic fee for the service? If so, how much?

I've Googled several sites which (along with this thread) sold me on the service. But, nowhere did I find a quote on the cost involved.

I received a similar welcome. I guess us "out-of-towners" do not mean as much as the "locals".

What if I order a color change set of panels to use on both of my smarts. Will they have 2 VIN numbers? Does it even matter?

Is it possible that only the dealership needed to have the panel etched with the appropriate VIN before delivery, whereas an owner can do whatever they wish with their panels?

That would be my guess... Or, that US import and NHTSA regulatons mandate that specific component parts have an attached VIN label when they touch ground here.

I just opened my hood (bonnet) piece and noticed that there is a VIN sticker on it. The sticker, however, doesn't appear to be the typical NHTSA security-type sticker (...leaves imprint if removed) found on, say, newer Toyota or Honda vehicles. And, it doesn't appear to be located in a specific area on the component (...just slapped on the inside of the hood.)

We got an orphan and paid quite a bit more for "add ons" tinting, stripping, just things for outer looks-- is this normal or were we had.
We love our Smartie- have some paint issues on the add on different bottom part for different coloring-- which was an add on.

That's my feeling as well. A guy I worked with had his BMW 540i lifted, and Jo Jack found it a few days later. It should have been totaled, but being a $60k car, insurance repaired it. It was never the same.

Lo Jack says on their website and TV ads that they have a 90% chance of getting your car back. That's because the other 10% are stolen by highly skilled thieves-those cars are parted to the bone or out of the country within hours. They are able to find and disconnect the transmitter quickly and so it is not a deterrent. A large number of cars are taken for joyrides, quick theft of wheels, airbags, and other expensive parts and discarded. Others are used in the commission of another crime, and are similarly discarded. If you get it back, you have to pay the insurance deductible, and in some parts of the country your rate will go up since you'll be placed in a high-risk area category.

If it makes people feel secure, go for it. I'd rather give my car to the valet guy in Ferris Bueller...

p.s.- My door panels are in my living room, and they don't have the VIN on them, but they are marked as being made from recycled materials.
