That's my feeling as well. A guy I worked with had his BMW 540i lifted, and Jo Jack found it a few days later. It should have been totaled, but being a $60k car, insurance repaired it. It was never the same.
Lo Jack says on their website and TV ads that they have a 90% chance of getting your car back. That's because the other 10% are stolen by highly skilled thieves-those cars are parted to the bone or out of the country within hours. They are able to find and disconnect the transmitter quickly and so it is not a deterrent. A large number of cars are taken for joyrides, quick theft of wheels, airbags, and other expensive parts and discarded. Others are used in the commission of another crime, and are similarly discarded. If you get it back, you have to pay the insurance deductible, and in some parts of the country your rate will go up since you'll be placed in a high-risk area category.
If it makes people feel secure, go for it. I'd rather give my car to the valet guy in Ferris Bueller...
p.s.- My door panels are in my living room, and they don't have the VIN on them, but they are marked as being made from recycled materials.
