Had mine tinted today, 5%. Talked to NJ State police, ticket is $35.00, worth me rolling the dice.

It was my understanding that anyone can get their windows tinted as long as you follow certain guidelines, like the tint % sticker must be displayed on each window, the tint cannot be too dark (limo tint), etc.

Are your windows tinted and no % sticker present ? I find it hard to swallow that NO tinting is allowed in NJ, some vehicles come from the factory with tinting, in fact, my smart is the only vehicle I've ever owned that didn't have factory tint.

If your only holdback is no % sticker, I'd take a ride back to the dealer and let them know and have them correct it.

Home tint-jobs typically omit the stickers and that's where you get in trouble, shops that tint know better (and do a better job).

The smart has OEM tinted windows: if you open a window partially you can see it has a discreet slightly greenish tint.

You can tint the rear and back windows, but not the front or windshield. Good luck with the tint, perhaps the $350 it cost my friend was exaggerated or included a town surcharge and/or other violations she neglected to mention....

I don't think that's tinting, I think that color is due to the "safety glass" making process....

Ask around. Plenty of folks who might have the tinted tail lights sitting in the garage after their tickets.

Just went to scAlexandria and asked about the OEM tint, it's on all smart, approximately 10% against UV.

Correction about the roof, from «Introduction of the smart fortwo, Model series 451, Introduction into Service Manual, page 92:
Quote:
A polycarbonate (PC) panoramic sunroof with step
lessly variable roller sun blind is available for some
equipment variants.
The roof module is bonded to the tridion safety cell.
The latest in plastics technology makes it possible to
use breakproof material extensively in the vehicle.
The material is covered with a scratchresistant
coating and the light transmission of the tint is
approx. 13 %. The material also provides 100 %
protection against UV light.
I understand that most of us, when talking about "tint", mean the darker colors and/or the reflecting coat (Limo like). But anything added during the glass making process is a tint...

Been in Jersey for 7 years, All lights/Windows tinted in Vette and MINI, no problems from any LEO's. One lives across the street.

Happy New Year!
