Nash metropolitan ,Corvaire, English ford, And HUGO, And a few others, along the way, that i have forgotten.Several of these were favorites at the time i owned them,Right now i am trying to find others that own or would like to own a YUGO....Thanks Dan
Malcolm Bricklin, he of the Bricklin SV1, wouldn't be satisfied until he had forced every American to walk to work. To that end, in 1985, he began importing the Yugo GV, which turned out to be the Mona Lisa of bad cars. Built in Soviet-bloc Yugoslavia, the Yugo had the distinct feeling of something assembled at gunpoint. Interestingly, in a car where "carpet" was listed as a standard feature, the Yugo had a rear-window defroster — reportedly to keep your hands warm while you pushed it. The engines went ka-blooey, the electrical system — such as it was — would sizzle, and things would just fall off. Yugo. Or not.
I haven't seen a Yugo on the road in the past decade. Just figured they all fell apart. IMO, the Yugo doesn't belong in the list with the other cars you mentioned. Except maybe the Corvair , but I've never owned one, and am totally unfamiliar with several others you mentioned.
A couple of days ago, a guy (obviously not a car guy) asked me if my smart was a Yugo. I was shocked and a bit offended. Asked him why he wanted to diss my car like that!
Well their was a point in my life when the concept of buying a new Yougo for less than a used car was appeaing. The thought of buying somone elses problem didn't appeal to me. Problem was you were buying your own problem.
My Yugo has 26,000.miles on it,i bought it 2years ago,and only use it once in a while.i have been trying to find another trailer for it,the guy i bought the car from use to let me borrow his trailer, but i want one of my own if i keep the car.
Hi: Thanks for your posting,I like the little Yugo, It gets very good mpg,and as a youngster i owned a few Fiats Im'not sure of the spelling of many of the cars i have owned,I have helped my friend several times get fire wood with it, and when he had part of his foot removed from diabetes,he finally sold it to me.He has a little trailer,(that i have been trying to buy off of him)He won't sell it. We would load up the back compartment of the yugo, then load up the trailer, the trailer wood hold more than a face cord of wood, and it pulls very well...
Although I would consider ownership of a Dauphine, I had never given much thought to a Yugo, and while there were none on AutoTrader (curious as to what one might have to pay for one), I do see that Zastava is still making 15,000 cars a year although the company is for sale. Somebody must want a Yugo.
BTW, saw one on the road last year, but it is a rare occurance.
I guess it would not be bad car for the experienced Fiat mechanic, but parts may be an issue these days I imagine for the Yugo GV. Find me a Yugo Cabrio in not bad shape and I would be willing to consider it.
