Dec. 3 Dodge dealers started ordering the 2008 Challenger. Just checked E-bay, and there are several being offered by dealers at $5,000-$25,000 over the $42,000 sticker price. Think Penske can keep his smart dealers in line?
The Challenger that is being bid up is the SRT8 version, the only model being offered initially, which is bound to be a collector's item. Speculators are bidding it up just like they did the Mustang GT500. The regular models will not garner so much speculative bidding. It's all fool's money. The winning bidders will have to wait years just to reach the break even point. I wish 'em luck!
On the other hand, we smart drivers are getting a car which wll also be in short supply and will no doubt be sold by some buyers for more than sticker price. But no one will make a fortune from it, except perhaps Mr. Penske!
I consider our purchases much "smart"er!
P.S. A close muscle car nut friend has a down payment on a Challenger SRT8. Hope he gets it!
C'mon, the Challenger? Do U.S. automakers have to relive the 70s? I mean, are they that devoid of innovation that they have to pander to the Boomers' fond memories of how rockin' they used to be?
These cars do nothing to advance driving and the way cars are perceived here. As long as big and muscular autos are around, their drivers don't have to be!
Actually Shanna, those 70scars were, by modern standards, pure crap. They sucked gas, they rusted like crazy, they handled terribly and their brakes wouldn't stop a horsecart. The new ones are superior in every way. And there are a LARGE number of people interested in them. They're fun!
Pay attention! Up next - the Camaro! The El Camino won't be back until later.

Let the "Boomers" have they're fun. Muscle cars were probably the most powerful statement ever made in auto history. Certainly not practical in any way, shape or form...just shear awesome power, noise, thrust....and yes...sex!! I have many great memories from my Challenger and Mustang.
They're style is classic. They'll always be beautiful.

Bob, I'm all for the Boomers having their fun, but it is kinda pathetic when a car that appeals to men is associated with sex. I mean, every woman I know gets creeped out when a balding dude (with a ponytail, no doubt) pulls up next to her in a fiberglass pen*s, I mean, Corvette. But hey, if catching another guy's eye is what it's all about then pedal to the metal, baby!
And, for the obtuse, take this post with a smile--I know I wrote it that way ;)
That's pretty much my attitude. And I get away with it, too, as I ride a powder blue Vespa with a "tealish blue" leopard seat cover here in Heavy Iron country. Yea, I get comments. I'm way passed giving a rats patootie what anyone thinks about me.
<----balding, but no pony tail. And it is an MG, not a 'vette. ;)
