900cc turbo 2-cylinder making 85hp in a Fiat 500?

Interesting...

Small Engines Get Even Smaller: Fiat's Turbocharged Twin

Many makers offer three-cylinder engines in European models, with the smallest being an 800cc diesel, developing 45 hp, that is offered in European Smart ForTwo models.

Fiat's new turbo twin develops 85 hp from its 900cc. When it is introduced at next month's Geneva Motor Show, it will be accompanied by a base 65-hp version and a high-performance 105-hp turbo model as well.

Perhaps they will have a sign on the back of the vehicle indicating 'you have just been passed by a 2 cylinder car'?

I'd be real interested to know at what RPM that number is made. Torque moves the world........ a big horsepower number doesn't mean a lot if it's at 7000 RPM.

Absolutely correct!

In this world, Horsepower alone means nothing, 0-60 alone means nothing, handling alone means nothing, EPA ratings are meaningless...

What matters is how it performs all round, and if those pretty numbers get produced at high rpm then the car may not be any faster than the smart...and may struggle to get good mpg, like the Japanese version of the i.

Now Fiat has one-upped its European competition by announcing it will offer a 900cc turbocharged twin in European models of its Fiat 500 mini-car. That engine won't be fitted to the 2011 Fiat 500 to be offered in the U.S. at the end of the year; it will use a 1.4-liter four.

Today, only one other carmaker now offers a two-cylinder engine in a production car. That's the 623cc, 33-horsepower twin used in the Tata Nano now on sale in India.
Not for us anyway...

I don`t know guys, I don`t like twins. I love 3 cylinders because the non-firing pistons are never swinging from a dead stop. A twin must always fire when the other con rod is at dead center (except for Vtwin).

*update: taking bets on who's gonna be first to the one cylinder party.

Bet that engine will not have a long life.
Probably scream like a two stroke.
Be fun to thrash, but it would die young.

My motto is that if you need to eek out every drop of power, then you simply need a bigger motor.

That comes from being involved in, VWs, Ultralight aircraft, and homebuilt aircraft too long, and watching people try to make a little engine as powerful as a bigger engine, and seeing the results.

A little more info on this engine... I wish they indicated at what RPM power was made.
