Ok, so maybe turning an 85 GMC jimmy into a smart car is not the best idea...
Just kidding. It is on it's way to have the motor installed to replace the one with the bad knock. The kid has learned to add oil when it gets low. I added 4 qts when it started making noise....
Good to go. I had a kid here at the school las week that thought her motor was shot. Low oil pressure. They even hooked up a manual gauge to double check. Finaly the instructor mentions to the kid that maybe the filter got clogged somehow. I helped her replace it then proceeded to add a quart of oil. I checked the oil first, nothing on the dipstick. I added a quart. Still nothing. Added another, nothing. Went and asked the instructor if he checked the oil, he said he saw the kid do it. I went and added another quart. Nothing. Finally added a 4th quart and it registered on the dipstick. Grilled the girl about how to check oil properly, she actually wants to be a mechanic someday too. She's actually pretty good, just made a serious mistake, thankfully it was her truck. Cranked it up, 60lbs on the manual guage. All is well.
How long till they get it swapped out? I'm doing a rebuild on my junker, might give I to my daughter, looks horrible but it'll be perfect mechanically.
The guy is picking it up tomorrow, Might be done by Monday (??) Not in that big a hurry to get it but it has to be done. I traded the labor for my Expedition with the bad trans. Book says 5 hours to swap the motor, I think they are a bit low... That 4WD adds a a lot of time.

I have a friend (not a car buddy) that drives a 95 Mitsubishi. He called me, said he has a clicking when turning. I told him to take it to a shop, should be about $200.00 for an aftermarket axle. He called, said he got it fixed, but the shop also did a "High Mileage" oil change. I asked how many miles, he said 119,000. BUT, he said it was due to him not changing the oil for THREE YEARS ! I asked if the oil was low or black, he said he didn't know, he never checked the oil since the last oil change !! I told him he should not be allowed to own a car !

Years back, ex-wife drove a Mercedes 240D. I would check the oil for her every once in awhile. It was always one of two conditions.....nothing at all showing on the stick, or the oil on the stick was coal black and as thick as cold maple syrup. That was a great engine to last under those conditions. Traded it in at over 200,000 miles and was still running strong.
