Wow, that was a nice car! If American Motors were still around today I bet they'd be doing really good. They always like to think outside the box. Sometimes too much (remember the Pacer? ). I bet that AMX would be worth a lot of money today to a collector
For the last 5 or so years I drove an '02 Golf TDI on biodiesel. The biodiesel stickers and the smell of whatever the oil was previously used for cooking got lots of stares. questions, and comments. Driving a SMART ain't much different. Maybe I should get a Ford 500 next.
Boss 302 Mustang
Pinto Panel Delivery Truck, Title said truck, not crusing van.
Honda N360 Micro car with 360CC motorcycle engine. (When stationed in Korea)
Renault, don't remember name, we just called it a flying shelter half. (When Stationed In Germany)
...but here's a few. More picts of unusual micro cars in my Gallery if you're interested.
1970 Subaru 360 sedan
1969 Subaru 360 van (with a 1981 Honda Civic CVCC wagon and big 1984 Ford F250 w/lightbar in background)
1972 Honda 600 (this one is not mine, but I had one just like it in yellow)
1959 Isetta 600 2-door, 4 person micro (mine was the same car in silver - man, I WISH this gorgeous show car was the one I drove in the 70s!)
I also drove an assrotment of 1960s and 1970s VW bugs, a 1976 Honda Civic CVCC 2-door, a 1963 MGT, a 1988 Subaru Justy 4x4, and for a short summer in the early 1980s I drove a pre-war (probably 1940) Crosley - a true 'early' micro car for sure.

I still have the AMX. Unfortunately, AMX's have not skyrocketed like many other muscle cars. That said, it is a cool machine. 390 4-speed 'Go Pack'.
The 1970 Mustang Mach I with the 428 SCJ is a different story. I sold it for $1000 in 1981. One thousand dollars. It had issues, but it was all there. That particular model had a bunch of specific and very rare parts like a factory oil cooler, a super duty 4-speed with larger shafts and gears, and a 4.30:1 Detroit Locker differential. It also had the very rare shaker hood. In restored condition, they go for, gulp, $90-100,000. One hundred thousand dollars. Here is one:
I'm clearly younger (and poorer) than many of you here, but here's my list from about 1990 to today:
1968 Lincoln Continental
1974 Pontiac Catalina Safari Wagon
1978 Dodge Magnum XE
1979 Chrysler Cordoba (factory t-tops)
(you can see that I've really come down in car sizes since then. My smart would have fit on the trunk lid of my Lincoln.)
1991 Chevy S-10 Extended Cab (with what I called the "East European Option Package" i.e., bench seat, rubber floor mat, AM radio, 4 cylinder, 5 speed, no AC, no power anything)
1985 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel
1996 Jeep Cherokee
2003 Jeep Wrangler
2008 smart fortwo
What I'd like to get next:
Daihatsu HiJet microvan to replace wife's Honda Odyssey with something closer to the Smart's scale and keep room for our 4YO twin boys.

Reason: adding Daihatsu desire
This is just a handful of cars I can think of off the top of my head that I have been stopped or had curious onlookers - just the tip of the iceberg for unique cars I've had.
- 2000 Honda Insight (Lime Green actually Citrus Yellow Met.)
- '03 Civic Hybrid (bought new - ahead of the power curve for the mileage movement)
- '64 Falcon Futura convertible (small cameo in Lowrider Magazine 11 years ago though it was NOT LOWERED)
- '67 Mustang Coupe (restored, nothing special BUT I drove it across Europe where it received Smart level attention- sold for a nice profit when done with the trip - left it in Europe)
