Also, consider VW Diesels, but I know they arent totally reliable...or at least they had issues a few years back...not with the engines, but with other parts going bad (i.e. electrical)...they get great gas mileage though.
The Avalon gets 28 mpg highway. 2009 Toyota Avalon Actually, the Prius will seat 5 if they aren't huge people, and has a spacious trunk. It will surprise you, actually more the size of a Camry despite it's small car looks. Kind of like another little car I know that looks tinier than it is on the inside....
Honda Accord - they're actually pretty big, on par with the Camry PLUS the Accord IS Made in the USA. Not quite an American car, but darn close to it and relibility is great. I gassed up my parent's '03 4cyl Accord today and it came out to 31.5mpg and a whole assortment of non-high mpg friendly drivers have driven it this tank. It has gotten 40mpg on a few tanks before too.
I think Trena is on to something with the Avalon; pretty close to all the requirements, seems to have the room, and is in the high 20s for mpg. Looks promising - thanks!
