Also, consider VW Diesels, but I know they arent totally reliable...or at least they had issues a few years back...not with the engines, but with other parts going bad (i.e. electrical)...they get great gas mileage though.

How about a Chevy Impala?

29mpg with the 3.5L V6 and standard seating for 5 people (up to 6 in some models).

Starts out $24,540!

Camry Hybrid.

You can't go wrong with a Toyota.

I had a Camry (really?) but not the hybrid. Mine was close to the base model, but for a nice drive and reliability, you really can't beat it.

and I think it's mostly made in the US.

The Avalon gets 28 mpg highway. 2009 Toyota Avalon Actually, the Prius will seat 5 if they aren't huge people, and has a spacious trunk. It will surprise you, actually more the size of a Camry despite it's small car looks. Kind of like another little car I know that looks tinier than it is on the inside....

Honda Accord - they're actually pretty big, on par with the Camry PLUS the Accord IS Made in the USA. Not quite an American car, but darn close to it and relibility is great. I gassed up my parent's '03 4cyl Accord today and it came out to 31.5mpg and a whole assortment of non-high mpg friendly drivers have driven it this tank. It has gotten 40mpg on a few tanks before too.

I think Trena is on to something with the Avalon; pretty close to all the requirements, seems to have the room, and is in the high 20s for mpg. Looks promising - thanks!

Would love the E-class; actually the E-class 4-matic wagon with Blu-Tec diesel. However, slightly over the $40K max.

Yes, I'm all for the CTS but she hates the design. Just read the Automobile magazine review of the 09 CTS-V - amazing, as it should be for an MSRP of $60K. May wait and see what the wagon goes for next year.
