Chrysler Fiat deal (bankruptcy)

Appears fiat took 35% of chrysler. Article said it will give Fiat a more accessible way to bring their cars in. Alfas were going to be sold at Masserati dealerships. Now, Alfa and Fiats might be as close as your Chrysler dealer. Fiat says they want to bring the 500 here and may even build cars in available space in Chyrsler plants.

The 500 would be a great addition to the mix, the articles I read say Fiat may assume complete control of Chrysler, if the 35% works out. They will manufacture small Fiat based cars here in the US. At least a step in the right direction.

Forbes: Fiat 500 could save Chrysler

From Forbes, this morning:
Quote:
Fiat 500
Fiat could provide Chrysler with the small-car technology and fuel-efficient engines it lacks. Its 500 minicar, MiTo subcompact and Lancia Delta compact are good candidates for shared technology. The problem is that no Fiat-engineered vehicle can come out of Chrysler's North American factories before mid-2011.

If Chrysler fully committed to some Fiat-based vehicles out of U.S. factories, even if for M/Y 2010-1/2 or 2011, it might make a business plan worthy of additional stop-gap investment. At a minimum they should now be addressing needed modifications for U.S. DOT and EPA as an indication of serious intent.

Last week Fiat approved the production of cars in 2 US and 1 Mexico Chrysler plants (as noted in Automotive news). 1 in Michigan, 1 in Illinois and 1 in Toluca, MX where the 500 and MiTo will be built. Fiat and Chrysler want it, now it's up to the Obama administration. I'd by a Fiat 500 in a heart beat (and keep the smart too!).
