Hybrid Tech to sell electric Smart for $35000

Hybrid Technologies" plans to sell an electric version of the Smart vehicle in the U.S. starting at US$35,000. It is being called a hybrid car even though the vehicle is all-electric. The electric Smart car will have a range of 120 miles (190 km) to 150 miles (240 km), a top speed of 80 mph (129 km/h), and charge in 5 to 6 hours using a standard 110V AC outlet. An electric Smart is currently undergoing testing in the UK and will only be offered to commercial clients as a trial for the time being.[6][7]
The unique design of the Smart has received much attention in the U.S. In its April issue, Men's Vogue raised the question: in a nation where your supersized car is your castle, is the Smart too mini for a man?[8]

smart has no plans on bringing their electric car to the US in the near future, after seeing how the initial roll out for the US smart was delayed three years and then it was finally introduced with a meager mpg engine compared to European models, I don't doubt big oil has a hand in influencing smarts decision. with big oil's record billions of dollar profits they will put pressure on all their allies to keep consumption up, just as their lobbiest' pressured the politicians to keep the next epa mileage standards low

well, the way i just figured it, at 12,000 miles/yr at an average of 40 mpg, that works out to 300 gallons of gas at lets say even $5.00/gal. that's only $1,500/year you would save. the difference between a Passion ($16,000) and their Electric Passion ($35,000) is $19,000, which would mean you would have to drive it for 12.66 YEARS to "Break Even". that $19,000 will pay for alot of maintenance and gas.....maybe even a NEW SMART!

i still like the idea of an 'Electric smart', but you may want to rethink your claim of 'it would pay for itself at the price of gas and maintenance'. ;)

i can see "Curtis" point and that's his opinion. i would imagine he still likes a little 'zip' in his cars and that's great. i personally would rather have a smart that is totally NON-DEPENDENT on fossil fuels, such as an Electric or CNG/Fuel Cell smart. but again, that's just me.

seems to me that as the EPA's mpg ratings go UP, so do the fuel prices. this i would think is because people are getting BETTER mileage, so they are driving more.

with the fuel prices going UP, all it is doing is encouraging people to buy higher mpg rated vehicles. this is NOT bring the consumption DOWN, but just the opposite, causing a bigger demand and therefore, escalating prices!

what we need to do is drop all EPA ratings and the manufacturers can make cars that get 5-7 mpgs again. when THAT happens, gas prices WILL fall because the demand will drop.

that's my story and i'm sticking to it!
