"smart fortwo Testing Summary: Not only did the fortwo fail to provide passengers with adequate insulation from the harmful effects of gamma radiation during the thermonuclear blast test, the CD player/radio also malfunctioned due to the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) effect. Following this poor showing, the fortwo's performance when dropped from the edge of the atmosphere by a rocket booster was similarly disappointing as the test dummies were subjected to intense heat during reentry and massive deceleration forces upon impact. Fuel economy and top speed during the extensive free fall, however, were adequate. Additionally, during the Mariana Trench testing, the convertible failed the submersion test miserably - especially when the top was down - and the touted Tridion was crushed like a tin can at the 35,000 foot depth. The seat warmers were also not up to par in the 35 degree water."

You guys kill me! I used to have some faith is the IIHS, but given their determination to prove how "unsafe" the smart is, I now realize they are nothing more than a corporately sponsored platform whose sole purpose is to try and get us all to buy huge gas-guzzling SUV's.

They announce these grand headlines about safety and insurance costs of small vehicles, and then their own data fails to support it!

The Smart TV videos at Smart USA.
One of the above is there. It was the roomy video that help make decide in favor of the Fortwo. The Godzilla and the big man video are nice too.

There is a Smart Life section at Smart USA. It has a photo of the Smarts on Lombard Street.

The IIHS reported the smart performed poorly when submerged in water when compared to a submarine.

All jokes aside, we know from a real world event, someone DID roll their Smart 3 times and lived to tell about it. As I recall from the photos, the Smart held up very well.

The IIHS test uses a static pressure test to measure the degree of crush. While this is helpful, it is NOT the kind of event one would expect to see in a rollover.

Tipping the car over and having it roll down a 45 degree hill is closer to matching the dynamic of a rollover. A better test would be to have a device that could start the car rolling on a flat surface.
