Infiniti Q50 collision avoidance

I've been seeing these ads on TV. Says the Q50's accident avoidance can work two cars ahead. And in the commercial, that coming accident is obscured from the Q50 by a big tanker truck.

How does that work?

More reasons for people not to take responsibility for their actions. Don't know how it works, but I can hear them now: officer, I thought the car would brake for me, it's not my fault.

The only thing I could come up with was that it reads what it can see up the road ahead under the vehicle ahead. Obviously the vehicle in front of the truck is not levitating, so there are four contact-on-the-road-patches that are potentially detectable with various forms of detection. Ultrasound maybe? Radar? That is my best guess. It will be interesting to finally hear how they do it.

Perhaps it detected that the vehicle of ahead of the Infinity was slowing down and sounded an alarm? There are some vehicles that stop a car when there is something behind it. Perhaps it just detected a change in distance? I always wondered about that commercial.

Two cars ahead?

Well, so far BB Benz has the best hypothesis. I'm a gonna have to do more Googling.

I looked at the website and saw the information there. Lane departure warning uses a camera system, which is visual, kind of like the Kinect for X-box 360. A visual system with two cameras, you can definitely make out things, along with curves/hills in the road.

The 4th post here explains how the avoidance system works forward and side, in response to a question much like mine. I'm still not groking the 2nd car ahead thing though. Apparently the poster didn't either.

Posts #7 and #10 here, agrees with BB Benz, while Post #9 merely quotes the same material as in the first link above.

First Drive: Infiniti's new Q50 feels driverless. With a $3,200 technology package that is. So, seeing a Q50, you won't know if the owner chose that option.

I guess it skips the radar off the road under the first vehicle in front of you. Interesting enough that I feel the commercial could've devoted a couple seconds to explain it. Do some Googling on the subject and you'll see I'm FAR from the only inquisitive mind

That's an impressive load of technology. But, nothing there about sensing a collision two cars ahead. Not that I saw, anyway.

The car warns the driver and applies the brakes if it anticipates an accident is imminent. In addition to identifying cars ahead of you, the new S-class also monitors cross-traffic as you approach intersections.
