Well, there's an airbag back there which should help a little. Just remember all the comments from the thread about the guy selling his car because he was worried about getting rear ended - nothing to it.

Sure, as long as it goes 0-60 mph in 6.5 sec or less.

For that rear passenger: You know you're in a bad position when getting whiplashed means your head hits the other guy's hood! As a defensive strategy, the driver should put the passenger with the hardest head in the rear position so the passenger's head will activate the other car's crush zone.

I read that it is a similar situation with similar sized cars like the Chevrolet Aveo and Nissan Versa.

Both Aveo and (especially) Versa have a large enough cargo space behind the rear seat to crumple up before it even touches the back of the back row of seats. On the Smart, your head is closer to the back window than it is on the Versa.
