In my opinion the Smart has more to offer than the iQ because: IQ offers no Cabrio or Panorama roof like Smart. Toyota does not plan to make one either. At most they may make a basic sunroof option but even that is a small possibility.
Personally, when I drive, I look forwards. An up window isn't that important.
Lots of cars don't come in cabrio form, as long as non cabrios have air con, I don't see the problem.
I'd never buy a soft top, too fragile, too delicate, higher road noise, reduced security, expensive to repair and replace, more stuff to go wrong.
I believe the IQ will outsell the smart because it looks nicer and people know and trust Toyota.

I don't think the IQ will do well at all in the US unless Toyota makes some major changes...take a look at the specs...it has the same size engine as the smart, is about 2 feet longer and weighs a little more - it will have much less pick up than the smart especially with three or four passengers. over 14 seconds to get close to 60 mph

Don't get me wrong, I love my smart. But the Cookamatic roof and the rattle box cabrio features do nothing for me.
I own and have driven them both.
Not that it matters, but you're not completely accurate.
The panoramic roof on the Smart does give the feeling of a much larger car, I enjoyed it while I had my car.
If Toyota came out with an Iq Spider or Iq cabrio and if it gets more gas mileage than my SMART I would probably let the Smart go for the iQ. I hope thats not the case because I LOVE MY SMART.

My configuring window just closed, and I didn't order the cabrio due to cost or the panoramic roof due to heat. I had mixed emotions about not ordering either, but now with your post I feel better. In my suv there is a really big sunroof. I do know from experience that if the sunroof is not open I have to close the shade otherwise it's just too hot in the car.

If you read the article, if iQ ever will get here it will have 1.5L engine same one they use in Yaris. My wife drives Scion xA (definitely better acceleration then Smart and 35MPG average not too bad). If Toyota will keep the price under 14K it will sell like hotcakes.
Design wise iQ is just short Yaris hatchback.
I personally like weird and different (in a good way) cars. New Nissan CUBE is another car I looking forward to see here in the States. Asymmetric design, similar to xB but 20" shorter (wheel base about the same as MINI). Original report was that base price would be around 11K.

Thanks, I feel better about my choice.
I love my panoramic roof. Actually it was one of the selling points for me. I live in Florida and have the car since April, and I do not understand why so many owners have a problems with it. Factory sunshade is doing a good job to keep the heat from the car.
How many misplaced Toyota IQ threads are enough? For crying out loud, someone merge them all together into one giant heap of an IQ thread where it belongs.
