Not Smart but Interesting

I just watched a car auction...1958 Corvette...sold for 90,000. I had a 1959 that I picked up in Lake Placid purchased as a company car through Chevrolet at a discount for $2,600.00. Sold it two years later for $2,500.00 to a father whose kid took it to college. My AAA insurance for full coverage was $90.00/year. That was the last "fun" car I had. Smart is the first car I have been excited about since the Corvette.

The 59 had more chrome and looked great. I take it that you had or have a good record for $90/yr. ...lol....

That would be in 1959 dollars.

I hate watching the Barret's auction... but drawn like a moth to a flame...

I usually see my $1700+ Mustang Shelby GT350 (well one exactly like it) go out the door for more money then I have made in 30 years... never did get the Vette I always dreamed of...insurance cost was the reason...the cost of the used vette was usually within reach but cost of owner ship was too much for a low ranking enlisted soldier with wife and child...

probably will never own one for same basic reasons..I only dream of the top dawg vette and cost of ownership is beyond our means

along the way I got to own some real fast and well behaved cars but as good as they were technically, they really did not have the panache and allure of the Vette....

Owned or drove all the very best, fastest and technically superior motorcycles through the years... finally got my Harley Davidson FXR big Twin... not as fast, not a very technical bike at all, but she has all the right lines, sounds, feel, and looks, to make her one of the few loved possessions of my life....

I doubt my Smart will ever really fill one of these desire spots for me...but I fully intend to have as much fun in my unique Lil bugger as is possible in any "practical" car

Fred, don't know which Vette you'd want but prices on the C5 Z06s are dropping fast. Mostly high 20s to low 30s now, but if the economy slows more they'll drop farther. Best value for money Vette out there IMO, but I'm prejudiced.

Humm interesting... I had the impression from water cooler/smoke area talk (I really don't follow domestic cars any more) that the new 'vetts were in the $75K and up range

Well, the C6 Z06 is in the 70s; new ZR-1 is $100K. Stock C6s are mid 50s to upper 60s (verts). C5s are great buys for that reason.

It was new husband, child on the way, and beginning marriage with not much money that made me take what I thought was a real "deal"...$100 less than I paid for Vette after driving it two years. Now after that auction I keep saying N i n e t y T h o u s a n d D o l l a r s ! ! ! and just shaking my head, but who knows what would have happened to that car anyway after all this time. Smart, where the heck are ya? #1232 just waiting for come and get it.
