All manufacturers have come out with concept micro cars. Mitsubishi has an electric model shown in the new Road & Track. This thread started with the mention of possible competition for the smart car. Look at the new issue of Popular Mechanics, there is an article about clean diesel and mention is made of the 2007 VW Polo Bluemotion. It's a 1.4L three cyl. diesel that gets 74 mpg. (base $23,315). I would seriously think about something like that. As much as I would like to have a smart, I first of all want great mileage. That was my original interest in the car. Now the mileage figures have dropped from 50mpg to 40mpg (we'll see about that) but I want this car to be my daily driver to and from work. If that VW were available here, now, I would be getting one of those. Even at the most optomistic mileage figure given for the smart the VW beats it by 24 mpg. Granted diesel is expensive, but, around here, no more expensive than the premium gas needed in the smart.
