Since the new factory is not supposed to be operational until 2011 (in France) if they were to sell the engine to Daimler for smart, the earliest use would be [best guess] 2012 model year giving smart a minimum of 5 model years on the Mitsu engine.

Too much capacity for TPCA v.2

The improved carbon footprint for this engine family would not just be in the tailpipe emissions, to meet future emission guidelines of >100g/Km CO2 in the EU, but also in the reduction of the emissions for shipping the Mitsu engine into Europe (unless it is already being produced there-I don't know BTW) for production.

From a manufacturing standpoint the synergy of an >24 hr. transit time from PSA to Smartville would enable large scale cost savings for smart vs. the Mitsu engine. This would include inventory costs (no inventory for the PSA engine if handled JIT vs. inventory storage, handling, waste & spoilage) and may enable smart to stabilize costs down the road.

Too Much Capacity for TCPA v.3

JPaul's post included the press release from PSA noting a 600,000 capacity for the new engine in the French factory and a second factory in eastern Europe a year later.

This is far in excess of the current 1KR-FE I3 998 cc engine being produced for used inthe Toyota Aygos, Citroen C1, and Peugeot 107 produced by Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile consortium in Kolin, Czech Republic.

Celles-la trois soeurs are currently manufactured at an annual rate of 100,000 of each marque's version. This leaves excess engine capacity of 300,000 in the French factory alone, without even knowing what annual production rate is planned for the eastern European factory.

Somebody must have already committed to a good portion of the excess capacity, or the planning assumptions don't make a lot of sense.
[This APICS class is now concluded-LOL]

If Peugeot engines are good enough for BMW and Toyota, they are good enough for me.

A smart with a PSA diesel would be a good half a million mile car if the Mercedes electronics don't crap out. Where can I sign up? I don't think anyone builds better automotive diesels than Peugeot.
