Rinspeed boss Frank Rinderknecht has certainly dreamed up some interesting concept cars over the years. Just recently, we’ve seen the amphibious
sQuba, the transparent
eXasis, and the shape-shifting
iChange. Now Rinderknecht wants to merge personal and public transport with the UC? concept debuting at this spring’s Geneva auto show. The question mark is intentional, and the name has two interpretations, either “You see?” or “Urban Commuter.”
The UC? is a two-seat electric car measuring just 98.4-inches long—about eight inches shorter than a
Smart Fortwo. The electric motor and associated battery is said to offer just over 90 lb-ft of torque, a range of 75 miles, and a top speed of 68 mph.
Instead of a steering wheel, you drive with a centrally mounted joystick. And when piloting loses its appeal, the UC? is designed to be driven directly onto trains for longer-distance and higher-speed travel. Both the car’s Lilliputian footprint and the ability to transfer easily to trains are intended to reduce urban gridlock.
Basically every Rinspeed concept ever built has been too esoteric to feasibly be built for sale, but the company claims that series production of the UC? is likely and that talks have begun with “volume manufacturers.”
