it's just nice basic transportation, he gets 35 mpg with auto in mixed driving and we got him Sirius radio which his must have. The new xD is definitely a bit more upscale as well as the new xB. As our smart will be the wife's her 'must have' was heated seats which neither Scion model offers so choice was rather simple (besides which she didn't like the new 'bulldog' look of the xD). We are always on the lookout for smaller cars with more features (heated and leather seats, navi', etc.) which is one reason why we also own the Mazda3 GT 5-door (great car except for the stock tires which are high-perf' and stink on snow, new tires on order). We're looking forward to the next gen of small cars (Fiat 500, Toyota iQ, etc.) to see if these go upscale like the smart as well. If these features don't matter to you then there are lots of small econo cars out there at prices at or below the 'pure' smart level to choose from.
