The 55 MPH Thread caused me to think about another issue. As most know, for safety reasons, the Smart Car is limited to 90 MPH as the maximum speed.
Given that some people drive at insane speeds 100+ MPH, 20 MPH above the highest speed limit in the USA that I'm aware of, should all cars be made to have 90 MPH as their maximum speed limit? ... Please give reason(s) for your answer.
How often do you actually see people going that fast? You couldn't even go that fast due to traffic in many areas. And where you could go that fast there's probably no one around.
Yes I'm aware of the "safety" concern with this topic.
i think there is a long list of better things for gov't to be doing than worrying about how fast cars can go.
it would also be difficult for such an action not to be interpreted as an agenda by one group against some other group. well-intentioned or not, that's also not something gov't should probably be getting involved in.
what next? gov't determines what color cars you can have? white for sunny states, black for cold dreary states? lol.
i think as a society, we need to look less toward gov't to solve perceived problems and look towards other, more reliable, more trustworthy, more efficient and better managed sources for solutions.

Every day on the 101 freeway to work (although I am on Summer vacation now) through light to moderate traffic. Worse yet is seeing it on a weekly basis when traffic is more than moderate.

I see it almost everyday in AZ, I do think regular passenger cars and trucks should be limited as there is no reason to be traveling that fast, none.
And it is not an issue of Govt. interfearing with our rights, driving is a priviledge not a right and nobody has the right to risk others lives at speeds over 90 MPH.
Governors should not be placed on emergency vehicles however.
never said it was a right, just that putting 50% of my paycheck towards these types of things never seems to solve anything. i would rather gov't do nothing, than to "try" to fix most of these "problems". cuz in the end, it just costs me more and the problems never get fixed.
when they fix education - then we can talk about how fast cars should be allowed to go. deal? lol.
You risk your bacon for your entire adult life in support of freedom and when you come home you find folks giving it up for free out of both pantlegs. Been to any good book burnings lately?

also - i cannot fathom the point of purchasing a porsche, ferrari, corvette or any other sort of enthusiast performance sports car if they're all going to be capped like a sunday driver. lol.
that would be gov't intervention into free trade i think - it would have dramatic economic impact in many ways. probably the majority of the aftermarket auto performance companies would also be dramatically affected.
and for what? what is federal gov't trying to accomplish by limiting the top speed of a vehicle? is it fuel savings? maybe your house thermostat should have federally-mandated limits. maybe you shouldn't allowed to consume more than your fair share of food too. in the interest of conservation and energy. your house can only have so many windows, so you're not bleeding too much energy out too. where does it stop?
