Renault Twingo, smart fortwo and Ford Fiesta were, in 2008, the three most often stolen cars in France, according to statistics of nine Insurers and Mutual Insurances collected by the weekly "AutoPlus".

smart are popular because parts are expensive, most of the time they're parked on the street, and they're easy target...
In 2007, smart were #1 on the same list!

That trend may transtion to the US the more popular smarts become. Just look at Honda Civics for example. They are popular, inexpensive, and because they are so common theifs had even more practice so they are now fairly easy to break into. Since they are popular theifs can sell the parts to almost any one with a Civic quick.

I agree that the Smart may make the top ten in the most stolen car ever. The fact that they are in such high demand still, and their uniqiue charchter will make it a prime target for the theives to take and sell on a black market. There is the peace of mind with lo-jack. Perhaps the dealers had a good reason for offfering it, or in some cases equipping the orphans with it.
