I think we're inching closer to understanding (and possibly accepting) why the Prius and new Insight have the body design they do.

Maybe the manufacturers need to explore a telescoping boat tail that comes out only at freeway speeds where the aerodynamics are most important. BMW is exploring the concept of stretchable fabric skins to literally change the shape of a vehicle, so it doesn't seem like such a stretch.

Mercedes did a test car based on the blowfish. It was in an issue last year (?) from National Geographic about designs based on lifeforms. One even look like a Starfire ship from Babylon 5. The Merc looked great although I seem to remember the medusa showcar from the early 80's looking like that also.

An inflatable tear drop tail with light compact LED lights and a rear view camera might work good, however if it's long enough it may need some Viagara or Cialis so it does not drag on the pavement when in transition.
It would always look nasty but should help a bunch.
The rear tear drop treatment would help more than any thing done to the front.
