Vintage Toy Cars

Anyone here old enough to remember Dinky Toys? I have a collection from the 1950's of about 60 Dink's (many in boxes-none mint), one Shuco Wind-up Racer (VW), and several Tekno's. Considering selling the collection, but not sure of their value. Could be anything from near zero to thousands???? Tom

Do you have any original tin Payas (Alicante, Spain)? I have the "big" wind-up Bugatti, s/n 3008. Got it in Palma de Mallorca (USD$400!) a day after King Juan Carlos was in the shop picking up s/n 3000 for his own collection.

Sorry

No, I never heard of Payas, but I do have a friend in DC area who was from Mallorca. His mother still lives there.

ARE YOU KIDDING? i had a whole bunch of those cars when i was growing up. i remember they were pretty detailed for the time and the cars that were supposed to have 'whitewalls' actually had 'white tires'. am i thinking of the right company? for some reason, i remember having a 59 DeSoto. must have been one of my favorites. after all, i AM a "Mopar Guy"!!

Jeepster55,
You are right. Dinky's were quite expensive in their heyday. About $1 each in the 1950's! The company went through many iterations. Even was associated with Match Box for a while.
The name Dinky Toys was still in use in the mid '90's.

i used to collect the 'promo' models that the dealers either gave away or sold. for years i had several from the 50's and 60's and a few muscle cars from the 70's. now i only have a couple left. sold a few, traded a few.....really makes me upset to see what they are worth TODAY!

my oldest was a 49 or 50 Plymouth. the first one i remember getting myself was a 1961 Chevy from the dealer in Downtown Indy. the salesman (i guess?) GAVE it to me. i think he was hitting on my Mom, now that i look back on it!

i kept collecting them until the mid '70's. at one point, i counted them and had over 500. if i only had all of them today, i could sell the collection and pay CASH for my Smart!!

Not What You Might Expect

All my cars were aquired in the 1950s and 1960's. I had the 1/25 scale "promos" (bought in stores). Sold the lot of them to a collector about ten years ago. Averaged about $50 each. Recently I took my 1/25 scale assembled kit cars to FX Toy Road Show (similar to Antiques Roadshow on TV). They averaged about $5 each.
FX offered me about $20 each for my Dinky/Tekno/Schuco collection.
No, I didn't sell, but FX told me that E-Bay has really changed the collectibles market. I have a print catalog that indicates Dinky's should be worth $50-$150 average depending on condition, etc.
Jeepster, 500 promos? You must of spent a bundle ... or your Mom was really hot! :-)

Correction

Jeepster, please note I edited my post.
The average price I got for my promo cars ten years ago was $50 each
(not $20). Unfortunately, there is not that strong a market for assembled model cars. The promo buyer wasn't interested in them.
As I mentioned in an earlier post the Dinky/Tekno/Shuco collection is available if anyone is interested. I have a list, but no pictures at this time.

I still have four or five army type Dinky toys. Bought them on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. We lived in Margate. I don't think I would recognize the downbeach anymore. Probably not AC either!
