What will this do to the present shape?

I just read this on MSN and I can't help but laugh. Here we are struggling for enough fuel in the world and until we have proven alternate methods that have reliable, low cost methods, including distribution - so for now we have gasoline/diesel. So since we know a thing or two about I.C. powered cars we know that factors such as weight impact the fuel economy. Now the "do-gooders" that try to protect us from ourselves want to "Improve things" and clearly this means more weight and maybe size. Remember all the posts from those car owners of the 70's-90's that had fuel sipping little cars, well why don't they exist today, because todays cars have to be safer and cleaner and that means weight which means a 1800# smart that should weigh 1200# like the original bug.

I for one am willing to take some chances. I have been driving for about 47 years and know a few things about what to do and not to do without big brother taking the wheel from me. Like the old politicans said in the teen centuries - run the buggars out! Besides a move for more dangerous cars would go a long way towards Darwin's theories.....

Government to improve crash test program
Upgrade, to start in 2010, adds overall rating, new front-end tests
The new system, which will start in the 2010 model year, also will include new front-end tests and a test in which the vehicle strikes a pole sideways to simulate the wrapping of a vehicle around a tree. Female crash test dummies will be used to represent women and large children.

Not enough can be said about safety these days...especially safety that is supposed to make up for utter stupidity. It seems one of the problems we have today is that due to too many Darwin Award nominees, the rules are changing to account for these jackasses dumb actions and they become the bench mark for the good of all the people including ones that are smart enough to figure out what they should and shouldn't be doing.
So this all boils down to various litigations that have gone on for one reason or another and set precedence for us all.
THIS IS NOT RIGHT!
Why can't people just take responsibility for a mistake when they make one instead of trying to blame their stupid actions on someone or something else???? Unless this society recognizes this growing trend to sue, sue sue.....we are destined to become anchored to our own systems legal misinterpretations, right or wrong, and have to bear the consequences of those misinterpretations forever and ever .....and at a cost most of us will not be able to sustain indefinitely.
Yes, Russ, I hear what you are saying.

I wonder if they could make a crash test dummy that is on his cell phone or better yet texting while driving?

Don't remember where I heard it, but "accidents are nature's way of eliminating stupid people from society". (To be taken with a grain of salt....)

Why not mandate Tridion "cages" on all cars, then they'd be as safe as a Smart.

Not a bad way to answer this question...

Some unfamiliar with the smart will ask, "Gee, is it safe in a crash?" My comeback to that is this....I tell them that they should think of this car with it's Tridion being more like an *Escape Pod* rather than a car unibody....

I know it is not ultimately guaranteed to get you out of an accident situation unscathed, but I believe you have a better than average chance of beating the odds if you're in a smart. Consider that accident explanation that was posted on here back a month or so ago where the smart was hit from behind at 25 mph by a 5 ton truck, catapulted across a street where she was then hit again head on by another vehicle, and came out of it with barely a scratch. This speaks very well for the smart, IMHO>....
