The Aerocar has a vehicle that seems similar in size to the Fortwo. It would be interesting if something similar could be done with the Smart. I have no funds to try it but it would be interesting to see if it could be done.

My Dad had an idea for how to transfer from powering the wheels to powering the propeller. He suggested that the engine would be connected to a generator. There would be an electric motor connected to the wheels and to the propeller. One would just have to turn a switch to transfer power from the wheels to the propeller.

People are nowhere near ready for a flying car - I don't need some knucklehead flying into buildings while texting his girlfriend.

I'd like 2 technologies - hovercars, which float over the surface of the road, saving us a fortune in road maintenance (no concerns about potholes or plowing) and self-driving cars to take the inattentive out of the mix. With GPS, self-parking, and adaptive cruise control, we're getting close.

From what I have read and seen on television, they are working on the above.

Not really some thing one would drive on the road.

I have seen this one, in person. it flys 375mph and gets 20 miles per gallon. take off and landing is vertical, will travel on the road at 30 or so, then just take off if you want to go faster.

I walked around the shop and saw it all.

Terrafugia - Transition®, the Roadable Light Sport Aircraft : Home
Press Conference and Press Release at 9:30AM EDT on March 18th, 2009

Boston, MA – March 18, 2009: Terrafugia, Inc., a game-changing aircraft company, announced today the first flight of its Transition® Roadable Aircraft Proof of Concept. Often referred to as a “flying car”, the Transition® is a two-seat aircraft designed to take off and land at local airports and drive on any road. Transforming from plane to car takes the pilot less than 30 seconds.
An historic milestone for aviation, the flight comes after six months of static, road and taxi testing. The Transition® cruises up to 450 mi at over 115 mph, can drive at highway speeds on the road, and fits in a standard household garage. The vehicle has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight. Both modes are powered by unleaded gasoline from a regular gas station.
