Picked up my smart on Nov 20th and on Nov 22nd I had a deer strike. Total damage to the car is $3400 and it will be heading into Checkered Flag's body shop this week.

All in all the damage is more cosmetic than anything else. I was impressed with the way the car held up. Even my adjuster was impressed with the minor amount damage that the car sustained. He feels that a larger auto would have had more damage. The worst part of the whole ordeal is that the car had all of 261 miles on it.

That is terrible. But glad to see it came out fairly well, and will be curious to how long it sits in the shop.

The car went to the body shop today. It sat at my house for two weeks waiting on the parts to show up. The only reason for the two week wait is because Checkered Flag's body shop only orders smart parts every other week.

The body shop called this afternoon and said the estimated completion date is 12/26/08. Seems kind of long to me since most of the work is plug in the part (lights, windscreen, yada, yada, yada) and snap this body panels on. Hopefully, she will be done before XMas.

I rear-ended an Accord on the freeway. Looked like relatively minor damage (bend fender, grill and surrounding panel, dented windshield washer reservoir, panel underneath the front end...) Still perfectly drivable except the panel wanted to drag on the roadway, so I duct taped it to the bumper.

When I called the service manager to ask about where to get body work done, I was told, "gee, ask your insurance agent." My agent knew a shop quite close to my home. Of course, they had never worked on a smart, and did not even have the parts lists and drawings on their computer.

Working from the parts list the insurance estimator had drawn up, the body shop (in the S.F. Bay area) ordered parts through the dealer. It took 7 business days for them to arrive. When I pressed for information about why, I was told they had to come from Tulsa, OK. A second, smaller order of parts that went in 2 days after the first took even longer to arrive.

Anybody else having this sort of huge delay?

The main smart parts depot in the U.S. is in Tulsa. Apparently the way the system is set up is for a smart center to order parts once-weekly from Tulsa. For scVAB it is on Tuesday.
