I only know of 1 maybe 2

smartcentersarasota

In the US I know of 1 CDI Smart and a rumor of another, if I'm wrong I'm sure I'll be corrected.

So the info you seak may come in SLOW, try the Ca thread, they only have CDIs there and they may be able to answer your question quicker.

API Service Grade

Considering that 1998 and later Euro diesel smarts were designed to accommodate European “City Diesel” (<50 parts per million sulphur) which became available about at that time, API Service Grade AH-4 would be OK. However, in the US since 2007, we are now distributing Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (<15 ppm) and because of that the latest API Service Grade is CJ-4 which should be appropriate for any diesel of any age or origin.

E.g. Chevron Delo 400, Shell Rotella T

Yup, Mobil 1 0W40 is a good one. Non-synthetic is forbidden.

This is what M-B 229.5 currently says (revised in 2006):

“MB sheet 229.5 approved oils; "MB Longlife Service Oils"
for passenger cars with gas and diesel engines with extended drain intervals beyond 229.3 oils, to 30,000 km, min 1.8% fuel saving (ed. "Energy Conserving"). first oils introduced summer 2002. ACEA A3 B4. For gas engines of the M100 series, gas engines of the M200 series and diesel engines of the OM600 series (not models with Euro 4 diesel particle filters).
229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils.
AGIP Formula LL DC 5W-30 (I)
Aral SuperTronic G 5W-30 (D)
Aral SuperTronic M 5W-30 (D)
Castrol DCO TOPUP 0W-30 (D)
Castrol Syntec European Formula 0W-30 (USA)
Elf Excellium 229.5 5W-30 (F)
FormulaShell Ultra AB 5W-30 (GB)
Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL MB 5W-30 (D)
Labo MB 229.5 5W-30 (F)
Liqui Moly Longtime High Tech 5W-30 (D)
Mobil 1 SuperSyn European Car Formula 0W-40 (USA)
Mobil 1 Turbodiesel 0W-40
Mobil SHC Formula MB 5W-30
Motorex Profil M-XL 5W-30 (CH)
OMV full syn MB 5W-30 (A)
Pennzoil European Formula Ultra 5W-30 (USA)
Premium Synthetik Motorenöl 5W-30 (DaimlerChrysler, D)
Quaker State European Formula Ultra 5W-30 (USA)
Shell Helix Ultra AB 5W-30 (Mercedes-Benz) (GB)
Shell Helix Ultra DC 229.5 (GB)
Total Quartz 229.5 5W-30 (F)
Valvoline SynPower MB 5W-30 (NL)”

IF 229.5 is required, the key Euro specification is ACEA “B4” for OM600 series, light duty diesel engines (the smart diesel is OM660 – “OttoMotor 660”), and that grade should appear on the oil container. North American API service grades change at different times and for different reasons than the ACEA. For example the Euros are currently conforming to EU-4 emissions with specific particulate filters and using D50 fuel (<50 ppm sulphur). Since 2007 the US has been using D15 ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) at <15 ppm, and our own specific filters and cats. For a 2006 CDI, a full-synthetic API service rated CL-4/ACEA B4 should do. Now, does the ’06 OM660 have an EU-4 particulate filter?

N.B. For the gassers, the smart engines are M100 series: M160.x for the BR450/R452 Suprex, and M132 for the BR451 Mitsu. The M-B "M/OM" numbers are not necessarily sequential.

I put Mobile-1 euro 0W40 in my 450 CDI but for the next maintenance I'll try the Mobile-1 5W40 ESP formula (emission system protection). 229,51 specification in gasoline and diesel engine. It's could be better for EGR valve.

The cdi doesn't use a particulate filter so in theory any MB 229.3 oil should do. However the cdi owner's manual states that MB 229.5 is required. I used to use Mobil 1 0W-40 but now use either Amsoil European Formula 5W-40 or Mobil 1 ESP 5W-40 both of which are MB 229.51 compliant and yes it's better for the EGR valve. In addition we fuel our smart with B50 biodiesel which really reduces the soot and makes the car run so much quieter.
