Sorry to disagree: the gap on the tridion shows the place where the sidebars of the roof can be taken off. See more at: DC mayor now driving a smart cabrio
There is a picture with the mayor at the wheel and the top down... click to enlarge
Well, the picture you're talking about it there:
And on this larger copy, you can see the gap in the tridion.
Anyway, Fenti drives around with this one, but he's often followed by the one behind as a security detail...

In the article it says he has dropped the security detail... Maybe he got it bullet proofed???
Also, how did he/city get one in 2 months? Nice perk...
It is called politcal clout my friend, and getting lucky with an orphan. From what i seen at the Alexandria dealership this place gets a good dose of orphans. I saw one in the look i want and model i am kinda hoping would become one so i can possibly get it.

I've ridden in a bulletproofed car. The smart's drivetrain can't handle the extra load. It would add at least 1,000 pounds to even the half car we have. But it was still funny to read.
2 months? Any dealership would be smart to put the mayor at the top of the orphan list. It's good business. It may irk some people at the bottom of the list, but that dealership is more able to serve everybody with the goodwill and positive press generated by bending a bit to serve the mayor's requests.
