Anyone remove the glove compartment?

I've got some bulkhead USB connectors that I would like to install in my smart's glove compartment (to connect my iPod and USB flash drives to my Alpine iDA-X100 head unit and to provide 5V charging ports) as well as a 120V outlet.

While I know that it can be done without removing the inner liner, I'd rather remove the liner as it would be likely to be a neater looking installation if I have full access to it. Anyone remove the glove box liner?

What do you mean by "liner"? You can remove glove box door in two seconds. There is two big pins at the hinges. I pulled them out without any tools. It is way easier to work inside glove compartment that way.
I tried to remove glove box completely, but without success. I removed underdash, and side covers (passenger side), and the radio, but couldn't find the way to remove the glove box. I might be wrong but I think that top dash must be removed too. Let me know if you'll be able to figure it out.

The entire dash has to come out to remove the glovebox door frame.

I see the glove compartment/box as being two items: the door and the liner. The liner is what the aux-in jack (for the Radio 10) is attached to.

That's what I was afraid that I would discover.

Sounds like that's the way to go then.

These are the USB bukhead connectors that I will be mounting in the glove box/compartment:

As you can see, I ordered them from pccables.com:

DATA SHEET Part #70552 USB PANEL MOUNT CABLE DUAL PORT BULKHEAD CABLE M-F 3FT

I ordered two of the above (four cable assemblies total) and it cost just over $20 with shipping. They are 3 ft. long with male type A USB connectors at the free end and female type A bulkhead mount connectors at the other -- basically, a USB extension. The male end will plug directly into my Alpine iDA-X100 for attaching my iPod or 32GB thumb drive. Or it can plug into an inverter that provides USB power out.

Looks like the same ones I used in my install plus mounting plate.

Nope. Mine's longer (sorry, I just like the sound of that).

I found the ones you used, but wanted the 3' ones so that they would reach the USB on the back of the radio.

you can get them any size from 1ft to 15ft

USB Panel-Mount Type A Cable -- DataPro

But yours is a very good find. They are a little bit cheaper and with minor modifications you will be able to use a faceplate. Please, post photos of your install.
