Ash tray to storage conversion

We are all looking for additional storage it seems. Got my ashtray module last night from Paul Bridle (great service). It attaches under the dash and folds out over the drink holders. It comes with a rubber insert but half the space is wasted with the cigarette holder - assuming you don't smoke. If you remove the insert you are left with a 5 inch round "ring".

I removed the rubber insert and fashioned a balsa wood insert (3/16ths thick)to fit into the bottom of the ring. I then painted it with flat black epoxy paint to strengthen it and pressed it into place from the bottom. Once you fit the balsa piece into place (superglue is optional if the fit is not tight enough), it can then be covered on the inside with some tool shelf rubber lining (think I got this at Lowes). As a bonus, it has a pattern that closely resembles the rubber on the bottom of the drink holder. If you don't want to purchase a whole roll of lining or have any at hand, any black rubber matting would do in a pinch. Presto! - you now have a 5 inch round storage area that swivels open and closed. Looks almost factory when it's done. One hour job max - have a beer while the paint dries.

Since it does not lock I would recommend that you place any loose diamonds or your gold Rolex in the glove box and lock them up - especially in a cabrio like we have!

i like it, i was thinking of possibly making a bond impression with my gps so it will hold it for me, but cables and no audio out on my nuvi 200 would be impossible, however, I have been playing around with some ideas, i thought a while ago i saw someone put a leather "cup" inside the holder, i will look around for that and see mabey they put a wood bottom and just lined it

Take it apart, solder 2 wires to the speaker and fit a socket, use this as a high level output to the stereo.

Mu grandson is in plastics in college. he is going to take my ash tray insert in September and make a mold to extrude an insert that has no divider in it. Will report in about October when I get mine.
