Brake Light Pulser ... DIY

On both our Scion and the Echo, which I just sold, I installed a pulser module for the center high mount brake light. It is sold by WebElectric http://www.webelectricproducts.com/products.htm and costs $35. Check their site for photos and information on how it works.

I believe in the concept of the pulsing as a means of catching the attention of the following driver. Some motorcycles now use a similar concept, as does Mercedes (after considerable research) on some of their cars.

It takes about 30 minuts to install. The kit contains the module, wire nuts, wire ties and instructions. They also throw in a lifesaver to eat while you're doing the job.

Unscrew the two torx screws in the lens housing with a #10 torx screwdriver.

Unplug the wires by lifting on the tab.

The ground wire is the solid brown and the hot wire is the striped one. Carefully cut back some of the tape that wraps the two wires together.

Following the instructions, cut the hot wire.

Attach the wires with the provided wire nuts and splicer.

Bundle up the extra wire with the provided wire ties and tuck it back into its space in the hatch. There's lots of space in there. Then try the brakes. The key has to be on, BTW. I used a long pole to do it myself from the back so I could check it before reassembly.

If you open the boot hatch all the way, you can operate the brake pedal and see the light while standing at the side of the car.

True statement. But to check which lead was the hot wire with my tester I needed to stand at the back. Of course now no one else will need to.

Thanks Dave, another good DIY post. I've got their GM version on our Corvette and it is totally plug & play. Too bad we can't get the smart connectors and wire it up without the splicing and wire nuts.

This one is only $14.95 and works great. I put them on all my vehicles.

Well, it's the turbo version - pretty rare but worth it when those big American V8s get left in the dust.
