On both our Scion and the Echo, which I just sold, I installed a pulser module for the center high mount brake light. It is sold by WebElectric
http://www.webelectricproducts.com/products.htm and costs $35. Check their site for photos and information on how it works.
I believe in the concept of the pulsing as a means of catching the attention of the following driver. Some motorcycles now use a similar concept, as does Mercedes (after considerable research) on some of their cars.
It takes about 30 minuts to install. The kit contains the module, wire nuts, wire ties and instructions. They also throw in a lifesaver to eat while you're doing the job.
Unscrew the two torx screws in the lens housing with a #10 torx screwdriver.
Unplug the wires by lifting on the tab.
