Hi Gang,
Just thought I would post some thoughts on Fred's Windscreen Install Solution. In two words, "IT WORKS"!

This past Saturday, I took his instructions and quickly installed my windscreen all by myself. It was a bit tricky because I didn't know if I should install with the top up or down. For those who have this great little item, please drop the top to install. That way you have access from both sides.

Other than providing a few more pixs on how to loop the bungies and how to install the cords, it went very well. I did one side then pull a little to install the other side. No extra hands needed.

The result: While driving down the shore, my hair wasn't flipping back and forth into my face which happenes if I don't tie up my hair or put on a cap. Now, I don't even think I need a hat or ponytail tie. All in all, it makes the rag top very much the cat's meow! Gosh, I love this car!

BTW, all this testing happened just before my button went caput.

Anyway and more importantly, thanks again Fred for your quick fix,
Regina

Windscreen Install

Great Solution.

I brought one of these back from Europe and installed it last week.

Instead of using bungie cords I used two guitar strap buttons and attached them to the roll bar.

I think on reflection your solution is better and will account for movement of the screen over time etc.

Thanks

Jonathan

HELP on ordering this part????

Howdy all.
I thought this was a great solution so I went to Tyson's Smart Center.
Gave them the part number (and the pic of the part label).
Waited while the parts guys did that voodoo that they do so well (most of the time).
They gave me the answer that "It's a euro part, not available in US, no way, no how."
So, how did you other smarties order this from your dealer?
I would like to order from Tyson's (I work there and get a discount), but will consider ordering from another dealer?

Got mine from The Bald Shop, a german MB distributor. Check eBay's UK & German site even if you don't speak German. Just use an internet translator, like I did.

* smart part number 451 860 00 74
* 2 ea., 12" tarp bungee ties (available many places...I found 'em at Home Depot...had to buy a "jar" of 12 for $5.00 to get two)

wrumbarger,

Sorry to hear of your ordering hassles. ANY smart part, "European" or non-US or otherwise oem should be able to be ordered through your local smart dealership.

That said, I have heard of some dealerships (like your local) that state they can't (or won't) order those parts. The windscreen perhaps more so because when the parts/service person puills it up it reads something like "Not for US model" or some such info.

Don't let that be the final answer! Tell 'em that your money is paying for it - all they have to do is order the part! ;)

If you can't get satisfaction that way, you can always have your local call the Bloomington, MN smart center and get the ordering details that way. I placed my order through them and it arrived with the other parts (floormats, rear boot storage tray, rear cover screen, etc.) no problem. If nothing else, call the Bloomington dealership and just order it through them - talk to Joe and tell him Fred suggested you call - and get one that way. I believe they would even ship it to you (for cost, of course). It's a fairly small item when folded and all so it wouldn't be much for shipping.

PM me if you would like a pair of the bungee cords. I have some 'extra's' around yet.

Tyson's only has three now. Wallace -- thanks for the bungee's, too. Lance and I fooled around with it until we got it right. Now I just need a day warm enough to try it out!
