Changing Pure roof color

I live in the midwest and keep my Smart outside. With a black roof, it gets quite hot when left out in the sun. Has anyone investigated painting the roof white? (I have a white Pure and will change the body to yellow (I've purchased the panels already), but the white roof would still work for me)

With info from SATO, "the solid roof is made of PU poly urethane. this info is from the smart technicians training manual."

Has anybody painted a Pure roof? Did you sand down or fill the texture? What type of paint did you use?
I am a bit frustrated by not having much technical information available other than the aftermarket DVD shop manual that does not offer much information. I'd like to purchase that technician training manual. Does anyone have details?

And yes, I was sure that technology has improved in the 30 years since GM was offering the soft bumpers. Obviously, the proper techniques and materials were available then, but either the painters were not trained or they didn't bother. While not a painting professional, I get a reasonable variety of the industry technical periodicals, and the array of plastics used in cars today is likely daunting to the average body repair professional.

Heck, when I started working on cars back in the 50s as a kid, virtually all the bodies were steel, lead was used to do filling of seams, and lacquer was the paint of choice. Today, the Smart, per what I see, has at least THREE different plastics on the exterior plus powder coated steel, each with a different finish requirement, at least for optimal results.

Cheers and thanks, Bob

Yes, and I'm getting increasingly active.

What top color are you looking for? Is your tridion black or silver?

I've painted up a 1/24 model with yellow panels and a white top and both tridions. Looks good either way.

Cheers, Bob

Many thanks. My concern is two fold.
  • Is there a surface coating, either protective or mold release? There seems to be kind of a soft layer on top that had me wondering if it was really fabric.
  • Worse yet, that idiot stylist's need to replicate some sort of fake fabric top! If there is some sort of coating or if I've picked up some grime, it will be a beatch to clean out of all those "billions and billions" of tiny depressions!
Cheers, Bob

Bob, take your car, up to Eveland Bros Body Shop. Have them prime it and paint it yellow. They work on all of Aristocrats and Barons cars. They'll know what kind if plastic the roof is made of. It not fabric top, it a plastic grain roof.

Take some Armor All cleaner to clean the grime off you roof. Spray it on, and use a soft brush to clean the grain. Wash off with a garden hose. You can buy he Armor All cleaner at Target.

Thanks Steve

Having had some comments on not keeping my white car pristine, I sure don't want to have a peeling roof!

Perhaps I'm getting a bit anal in this, but I've worked with resins, plastics and composites since the 50s, and seen as many bad results as good. I mainly know that good identification of the material, VERY attentive cleaning and mechanical preparation, and proper paints are the keys.

I'm certain that I'll have to sand off ALL the fabric texture to be sure of longevity.

Cheers, Bob
