UPDATED 4/2/08 info regarding FOG LIGHTS retrofit

Current status is that it can't be done.

I got this message from a smart technician the other day:

Quote:
i tried to add the lights to a car today. they are in. however they do not work. they work with my computer but do not when i press the switch. i called and talked to one of the diagnostic techs for smart. some german guy. he asked some other people and called me back. he said it is not an authorized retrofit. I am going to see what I can do to make them work. It seems to me and my parts manager that they do not know how to do it yet by the answers we were getting.
If I get more information from the technician I'll update the thread. Or maybe he will post in this thread himself. He has been quite busy so he asked me to post this message for him. There still seems to be some hope that it can be done. We may have to do it ourselves though since it's not an authorized retrofit.

I think...but not sure for the 451 that the fog lights will not come on with the switch unless the headlights are on. Did he have the headlights on? You know sometimes it is a question of....."Is it plugged in?" Anyway see this site:

Thanks, it appears to be a 450, but it DID answer a question of mine:

They are fog lights NOT driving lights, the clue is in the name.

Yes...that was a good hint. I do have to drive in fog often....here in corn country. What is really embarassing is when I realize that I have left my fog lights on for a day or two.....ughhhhhhhhhhhh

Since he is a smart service technician, I am hoping he already tried it with the headlights on. He did state he even called one of the smart diagnostic techs so I'm pretty sure he did check everything.

He did say he'll keep trying though.

I could also mean that SmartUSA PAG did not buy the full monty programming package from MB

And if not, I am sure is was a dollars or training decision and not a restriction from MB...

If you have the entire code set (you must down load per vin for a fee) there are a lot of features you can turn on and off...including a factory re-map for turbo... Plus the tool is not intuitive, fairly hard to use and can be system damaging if not used correctly...

We know that the fog lights can be factory installed..

I know they are controlled by the SAM (service accessory module)

I do not know if SAM if build specific or can have features enabled by OBDII port instruction...

But I do know the switching logic for all the lighting is controlled in the SAM

Perhaps a build specific SAM is required...hold on to your wallet...it is gonna hurt

Like the instrument pods, FQ101 has a guide on installing aftermarket fog?/driving lights, this time it is 451 specific. BUT, there is no electrical information. See: http://www.fq101.co.uk/451foglamp.asp

From the link fishrdnc provided I see they say to replace the factory switch with this factory switch

A 451 820 67 10 - New Switch Panel (x1)

They also have advice on how to by the MB fog lamp part as a Bosh replacment part for over 60% savings...

M-B dealer?

Anyone want to take their brand new smart to a Mercedes dealer and see if they can read the smart computer through the OBD port? Might be a long shot but the programming is from M-B so who knows?

I have factory installed fog lights on my smart and can tell you that the headlights (or parking lights) MUST be on for the fogs to work. Hope this helps.
