SAM = Signal Acquisition & Actuation Module.

I suspect that the fog lights have to be activated by the Star machine, probably not a TAN code but just a selection on their software.

They guessed and got it wrong, they don't even own a 451.

I have heard references in the past to the "Star machine." What exactly is it? Does every smart service center have one? Which now begs the question, do they know how to use it?

I will try and get a photo of what they use.
Essentially it is a laptop and multiplexer in a huge cabinet to make it harder to steal. MBStar is used at almost all Merc garages, they just need the smart software for it to work.
The alternative is Win-star.

Yesterday at smart center Dallas, Dave Schembri told my husband the foglight problem is a software issue. He said the are working on updating the software.

This is information I got from a tech:

We the technicians have asked the engineers enough times that they are going to start looking into making a retro fit. I talked to them yesterday and it looks like late May.
Yes! So a retrofit will soon be possible I hope.

I am the tech that t-bone if referring to. I am a mercedes benz tech first and smart second. I think I might know how to manipulate the SDS. I was the first tech to experiment with the car since I have access to Benz parts. The fogs worked with the SDS meaning I could touch the screen and they come on. I had the SAM coded..almost. It recognized that they were there but I had to be missing one line of code. I would press the fog light switch the led would flash for .5 sec it is supposed to stay illuminated and the lights didn't do anything.

its called a SDS star diagnostic system for benz. now i don't know what a standalone smart dealer calls it but that is the REAL name. I would post an attachment but it says i can't. It was quite entertaining when i went to school for smart and was listening to the instructors explain how it works to the techs that were not benz techs.

You are very close except for the huge cabinet part. The case is about 12x18x20. you get the idea. it isn't big
