So the window for the LED should be on the bottom half of the button, not the top half. The top half is where the small lights-illuminated backlight LED goes. The main LED on the bottom half is where the indicator window should be.
You scraped a window in the bottom, got the TAN code flash, your fog lights turn on, but you don't get any bright illumination there when you turn on your lamps?
So I finally figured out what the hell was going on. My drilled indentation to the button was too high... so it only picked up the background amber LED... a lower drill and the green button now works as it should.
JohnH... if you look at the left side of the speedo 3rd slot down below the high beam indicator it looks like that could be a foglight indicator... any thoughts?

That's the rear fog lamp indicator. ECE regulations require the rear fog lamp to have an indicator light that is easily visible to the driver, so that it is not accidentally left on or used when it isn't needed.
Wdhitch - that's what I was telling you earlier. Check out response #3 in this thread where I even show a tiny (actual) picture of the indicator. While I think it's intended for the rear fog light which isn't available in the US, I could put together a tiny LED board to go on that side of the instrument panel just like I did for the cruise control.
I'll be probing soon thanks to some spare wires from brett2658 that should show up in a day or two. (I so prefer to do my probing without harming the existing wires.)
Has everyone who has done their own foglights had them enabled at the dealer? If not, how does one enable them? I'm thinking I'd need the code to get different behavior on my own unused foglamp switch.
3m makes a clear universal adhesive part # 8217. When you drill the hole and tape the outside, you might be able to fill the newly drilled hole to make a "clear window" like the factory switch. I have cut the tabs off and was at a stand still about the light hole. If somebody wants to send there switch after you have drilled the hole i will fill the hole with 3m product since it is about $40.00 a tube and a $350. Gun to mix it i have all of it. PM ME IF YOU LIKE TO TRY IT!
John... if you comeup with a solution let me know... I'll be the first in line.
On the enabling issue... I had mine turned on before I secured the lights themselves... I think you could have them enabled and then just clip off the stock hookups and use the existing wiring... can't see why it wouldn't work.
Brett... The buttons are quite thick... I only had to drill a couple of mm to get to the opaque (sp?) part... didn't have to drill all the way through.
I could have the fog lights enabled (without actually having the lamps) but what do I have to do to enable them?
Wdhitch - what color would you like for the instrument cluster fog lamp indicator? The headlight indicator above is green, the high beam indicator below is blue. You'd have two cables going into your cluster now, not just the one for the Area451 CC. I'll use the same cable type but swap the direction (male/female sides) so you know which cable is which.
