Help Disabling Auto Headlights on my smart fortwo

So I've had a set of HID lights installed on my smart fortwo passion coupe for over a month now and I love them but after thinking about the installation a little more, I want to make sure that these lights will last as long as possible.

With that I know that the on and off characteristics of the lights with locking and unlocking of the car is very bad for the lights. I have talked with my smart center tech who tells me there is no way to disable this feature but I would like to think that with some cut and splicing there should be.

Does anyone have any idea how one could disable the headlights from turning on when you lock or unlock the car. I'm fine with any other lights turning on but do not want the headlights to turn on. If no lights turn on, that is fine as well.

ahh, that auto headlight function! I was thinking the best way to disable the auto headlight on at dusk feature was not to turn in on in the first place!

I'd have to double check but

I think the 'headlight/lights on during lock or unlock' only occurs when the auto-on sensor recognizes that its 'dark' and doesn't flash the lights, etc. when its 'light' outside. I seem to recall that in my garage they always flash unless the angle of the sun is just right and outside during daylight no flashing. I've got the regular comfort package and not with alarm but don't think it makes any difference. The only way to avoid the flash (w/o splicing, etc.) would be to turn the light switch to off (although I haven't tried this myself). I also own a Mazda3 with factory HID's and the lock/unlock just turns on the side and tail lights, although the auto-headlights aren't quite as sensitive as the smart's. The smart's seem to change with a passing cloud so regardless of the lock/unlock that may also make them wear out prematurely as well

You bring up a very good point that interests me.

1.) Does anyone without auto-headlight sensor know if there lights active upon lock and unlock?

2.) How about in the dark?

mercedes has the same feature as the smart about the lights turning on but the only thing is that they use the foglights instead. on the benz you can program it to not dO IT... the dealer will probably have to deprogram it for you. why dont you just leave the lights on off? would they still turn on if you lock/unlock??
