Mod the factory smart fortwo seats

Has anyone modded the factory seats?

More specifically I would really like to mod the smart seat so I can recline further and want to know if this is at possible?

I'm all for breaking the hacksaw out if needed but just need to know if its at all possible.

I believe so, watch the ratchet mechanism and look for a small chunk of metal thats stopping it from reclining.

Personally I'm leaving mine as-is. I backed one of my previous cars into a jersey barrier at about 50mph and damn near ended up in the rear seat due to the seat reclining itself.

With so little behind me in the smart I think its the safer option to leave things like that intact.

I can respect that but these seats are causing me honest to God back pains.

I don't have my car yet so I have no idea what the seat bolts look like . But couldn't you just remove the front mounting bolts and shim it up so it tilts back more? Then reinstall the bolts.

SMART - I have the same issue and wish my smart seats had lumbar support like my beetle sport. Hummm...? Wonder if they would fit the smart?

Smart.... DuneRunner... I am broken in a way that is hard to describe...lets say exceptionally hard landing in Iraq where all survived except the helicopter...

( no, not shot down... motor crapped out at 75' AGL and 60 knots)

Spinal compression and Fraked up Hip and Shoulder

I walk and motivate fine but some positions for long periods are simply murder

Bottom line is my seat is killing me too... I have good adjustable Lumbar supports in most of my cars and usually I can find a setting that I can take for several hours... but really in my truck I constantly change seat 6 way and lumbar support on CC trips

I doubt very seriously if I ever drive this Lil Bugger more then 2 hours in any direction

Been real busy with test reports these past weeks after the Ft lewis trip

If either of you find the user add in lumbar kits post about it but also PM me...

I know there are some kits out there.. I ran across them when searching for add in seat heating pads...

So, I investigated the issue today. It appears there the side brackets on the outside have two stops machined (punched into them). In order to make it recline you would have to remove the hinge / bracket. It looks like there are 3 or so bolts and remove the stop. I don't think it would mess with the integrity of the bracket if done correctly. I would be interested in finding replacement parts for this bracket and experimenting on an extra part.

Very interesting. I will have the interior out in the next two weeks and will look into this.

The link dunerunner found is about what I remember a few years back... not too bad a price at $75 each

switch, wiring, enclosed quiet air pump and three different sized Lumbar Bladders

I added in seat heaters some years back so I can attest that this is a job best done with the seat out of this dinky car

Thanks

And do post if some one figures the easy way to max recline...my drivers seat is good for me but I bet my wife would like to lay back further for a snooz if we do any semi long travels
