Funny that Brian started this thread nearly a year ago and there's a photo (#2) showing the little red "key" thing behind the shifter - none of us commented on it.

Like sausage or bacon being made, it would pain me to witness the process (or do it myself) but the end-result would be good. Good job.

I think it's even funnier that I've had the car 18 months and still don't know what it is. I brought the manual inside to read it when new and it's still sitting where I put it...

Thanks. What is a pain is that each time I do this, my hands hurt for days after itls finished. And I usually manage to cut myself at least once.

Yes, I still have the car, although it's been in the garage a lot- I think it reads 3200 miles. Unfortunately at this time I do have to get rid of it (and my mint, bought-new '83 GTI). I managed to dodge a huge health problem, but even with good insurance am left with similarly huge medical bills. On the up side, I hope to be ripping the interior out of a silver Brabus in a year or so.

Brian - off topic but look in this months (or next months) Hemmings Imports & Exotics magazine (just came out yeterday). They have a special dedicated to original owners. One of the cars is a '88 Scirocco bought new by someone. They are giving credit where credit is due. IMO the '83 GTI is a "milestone" car. The beginning of the 80's econobox pavement blasters. The Shelby GLHS and a few others I can't think of at the moment just to name a few.

Thanks for the tip, i'll be sure to pick it up.

I loves those Shelby Omnis. The build quality was far worse than the PA-assembled VWs, but they had amazing performance for the early '80s.

I saw an interview with Carroll Shelby, in which he explained the names GLH and GLHS. "Goes Like Hell, and Goes Like Hell Some more". Love it.
