Painting interior pieces... Must Read!!!

There have been a couple of threads lately about painting trim pieces and how to do it IE... sanding, types of spray paint... that sort of thing....

Speaking as a novice who tried it and just had to re-order $60 worth of parts have someone who knows what they are doing handle the job... I sanded, primed, spray-painted, asked advice... and it came out wrong.... very wrong. A couple of pieces were able to be saved but most were a total loss.

Sorry to hear that I would have tried it my self but was too scared so I got a new set painted from Boris & Rachel and sent back my stock pieces. Going to have BabyBenz do it?

I painted my clock/tach and speedo bezels aluminum to match the rest of the interior and they came out great. All I did was scuff them lightly with some Scotchbrite, and paint.

Wdhitch - What primer, paint, etc. did you use that ruined the trim pieces, so that others can avoid them!!

The primer and Paint were both Rustoleum Brand. It looks like I sanded the door handles a little too well... and because we couldn't get all the spray paint off, the proper paint wouldn't stick.

I used the Rustoleum for plastic to paint my pod bezels and speedo trim. Not being a painter, I didn't even try sanding before spraying and it worked out perfectly.

Worked out for now but it will flake off soon if they were not sanded

i hope I get lucky. the instructions on the can just said to clean the stuff first so that's all I did.
I really just wanted to say that the Rustoleum (for plastic) didn't do the nasty stuff to me it did to Wdhitch.
BTW, the work you did for him is really sweet looking.

Krylon Fusion is designed specifically for outdoor plastics - no prep-work is indicated on the can (though I always reccomend a quick wipe-down with paint thinner or alcohol to remove any oils or gummies that get on surfaces. Only down-side is the limited number of colors currently available. Check out my gallery to see the result (there is at least one pic there of the interior paint.) Biggest thing for diy-ers - practice on something throw-away but as similar in material as possible first, to get comfortable with the product (buy a cheap piece of plastic/plexi at Home Depot or Lowes). When ready, make sure you have a clean, wind-free environment, and take your time. Multiple coats is not a crime if the color is a bit thin the first time, but make sure you allow each coat to tack up appropriately first. Nice, smooth, even passes with the paint each time from 6" to 12" away, and try to not have over-spray too much (I sometimes use a fan at a distance, to get a very gentle air movement, to carry overspray off).
