I found, with both hands on the steering wheel, that I was not really using the armrest at all. If nothing else, I now have additional storage. At $99, you get what you pay for. The fake vinyl leather seems to blend in.
Where did you get one for $99?

I got the same one and it looks great in my leather black smartie. The color match and stitching look the same too. I will do my best to take a pix this evening and post it. I engaged the brake this weekend by flipping up my armrest and had no problems. Thanks, Regina

Installing Armrest

I too am very hesitant to install the armrest. It just doesn't seem to fit correctly no matter how far back (or forward) I put it. The one I recieved has three pilot holes for the mounting screws. The two in the front on the top will stick out like a sore thumb ( and the one on the side is too high up to screw into anything. I e-mailed pictures to the seller and he assures me that I have the right one. When I put it all the way back like you suggested but the back end of it hits the hand break and the front end of it sticks up. The bracket they sent is one level and is supposed to mount on a surface that is two levels **** I just don't think that the mounting bracket was designed for this car.

We tried to install the armrest today and we got it all the way back and screwed it in, but THEN, the hand brake would not go all the way down.
I wish I knew where to put this because I already have 4 too many holes in my smart and an unattached armrest.

....trimming/cuting the bottom 'cross over' piece? I'm not sure you have the same one I purchased (on-line, Canadian source...I'll have to check), but I found that in order to get it to install all the way toward the rear of the car - furthest back spot it can go - I had to use a pair of tin snips and cut out the little 1/2" wide piece that connects the two sides on the bottom back. Does that make sense?

Once that is gone, you can use the two 'top/front' screw holes (be sure to use the little concave washers to apply the pop-on screw covers for a clean look) and then use the two screw holes on the back-bottom to finish. Once again, use the washers and screw covers to clean it up. I found the other two 'bottom' screw holes (closer to the seats) are unnecessary/unused and practically hidden when you move the seat back a bit.

The most difficult part of the install for me was getting the seats forward enough to work and then getting my big paws in there to hold the washers and screws while installing.

I'll see if I can get some picts if still needed.

Thanks Fred!! We will try that. It is the one from Canada. We had used the washers on the front. My hubby had me move the seats all the way up and fold forward the first time around. I may be able to do it myself now since I can fit in the back through the hatch. I weigh 129. I found that was a good way to get to the back of the armrest. I have to work today but we will look into cutting that out, perhaps when I get home. Pics would be nice.

I bought one from there too and I had to play with the positioning to have it set down correctly, but didn't have to trim anything. I pulled the brake lever all the way up and moved it forward so that there was at least 1/2" above the top of the brake lever for future stretch of the brake cable, then drilled the holes. I used the three holes, then added a fourth on the driver side rear since there were four in the bag with it. I can fully use the brake, it is far enough ahead for me at 5' 8" to use the front while my wife uses the rear and it is much nicer than without one. Alone it is just right. We don't have to raise it to buckle the belts, but that would make it easier. It's great to have a little more storage. The black cover is real close to the black leather in my smart. My only issue it that it does flex some when I lean too far to the right. I have no connection to the seller, but on a 1-10 scale I would give it an 8 and would buy again - unless a stiffer one came out.

Armrest alternative

Somewhere on the internet when I was surfing, I located an armrest that bolted directly to the side of the drivers seat, and it matched our USA 451 interior colors.

If I remember, it was a bit pricey, but looked stock. Anyone know of who makes it?

Also, anyone know where you can get that raised lip rubber mat that goes over the engine cover and it's cost?
