Thanks for all the views.. I spoke to recaro today. they all suggested i call a few of their partner companies which Make brakets for cars which recaro does not. all the other companies requested my car be at their facility so they could charge $$$$$ and make the brakets.. i think im just going to tool around in my body shop with the mig welder. If i actually go through and make brakets ill post the photos.. if anyone has a solution please PM me. thnx.

Sounds like an interesting project; you might want to check the Canadian and EU forums to see if anyone has done this and has some info to share. If they haven't, there's probably a reason.

Most setups that I have seen use the stock brackets off of the stock seat, you need to build an adapter between the rails to mount the new seat, though.

the leather seats are pretty comfortable IMHO - not sure why recaros would be wanted or needed other than the bling factor.

Does Recaro make seats with air bags, or were you planning to forgo the air bags?

I used to design boats and one thing I learned fast was that there was no "perfect" seat design. If we could hit 80% we were happy. Well I am outside of the 80 percentile with the leather seats in my smart and I have owned a lot of cars. If I could get better fitting seats I would too and who cars about the airbags, I grew up before bicycle helmets, warnings that coffee is hot, seat belts, etc.....I'll take my own chances.....

i hear you - i had PRP make custom racing-style suspension seats for my off-road jeep. they took my various measurements and made a one-off set - the passenger side is even slightly different as wife is much shorter than i am.
i'm not discounting special seats for special situations - but i see the smart as an economical daily driver - not a race car or performance machine.
maybe it's just me.

will the smart even run if airbags are disabled? i don't know the answer. aren't the OEM seats designed with other safety measures too? metal backplates or something?
