To each his own.

Dude, you were krappping on my thread about changing some motor mounts too, are you the warrenty police?? I will say again, everyone gets to do what they want to their car!!

have you left yours totally stock? I guess if you go by your policy of warrenty and safety then any loose items in the car are a safety hazard unless fully secured, jeeez, I could go on, how about you let these people who want to change stuff ON THEIR OWN CAR do it and give us the feedback. Some stuff may work, some may not. I have taken many pieces of the car apart just to see how it is put together. So far I am very impressed!! I don't think I will change the seats, I removed the solid mount that I tried, I chose not to add any additional pockets to hold stuff, I am keeping the stock wheel/tire combo, I have made some changes and I like them all. So far, most of your posts are pretty negative. I have a suggestion, don't do any of these modifications on your car and don't tell me what to do to mine. I am cool with that!!

He asked for feedback, and I gave him my honest opinion. I wasn't intending to be rude and I said that. My comments aren't in the least bit negative, might want to keep searching. Am I not allowed to say that I don't like something? If you would look at all of my posts I SUPPORT other smarties modding their smart, it's very cool. Just because I don't like one thing doesn't mean I'm negative. And you're right it is their car, they can do whatever they want, did I ever say I had a problem with that? No. I have done many things to my car if you would have looked at my profile.

Your mod was very interesting actually . I simply posed the question (as others did too) that what if the smart engine was designed as such and if that would effect the warranty and safety of the car.

I just don't understand modding your car to make it less safe.

Maybe you are misinterpreting what I am saying or I am not making my self clear. I enjoy modding of smarts - but WILLINGLY decreasing the safety of your car, isn't smart in my opinion.

Enjoy your smart.

How about me?

I've been driving around like this for weeks now...

Proper 4-points and a harness bar... along with fixed back seats that have plenty of support (something the stock equipment lacks in...majorly)

Is it safer than a nanny-system side airbag?

Who knows! I don't want to test it without cause.

But I'm 100% positive that it's an improvement to the driving experience, and I feel more secure now too.

So have at it, tell me how I'm endangering myself.

If you feel safer than that's not willingly making the car less safe, is it?

I'd think it'd be fair to say those seats are very different from the posted Recaros which I was referring to. After all they are proper racing seats, which emphasize support.

It would be an improvement then, wouldn't it?

yup, I understand, My response was kinda edgy, sorry.

if you walk the safety line, you really cannot do anything to it.

someone can find some fault in every modification.

Tint the windows-decreased visibility........or increased comfort?

Larger Wheels and Tires-changes the geometry of the original suspension..........or makes the car handle better to avoid accidents?

Better Stereo-enjoy the car more......mask the surrounding enviroment?

storage pocket-places to put things.....something to hit in an accident?

Scangauge-Realtime feedback helping to get better milage and performance................another distraction that could cause a wreck?

Actually here is the bottom line, I don't want negative feedback, I really understand the ramifications of warrenty and still want to try stuff. it is my thin skin that has me getting defensive on this, how about if when you give someone feedback on posts that you toss some good and some bad. I personally listen much better when I hear "I like this for this reason and I don't like this for this" I hope you understand and I appreciate all your feedback. I want to promote safety and I want to promote research. I haven't really figured out where the line is.

see you at Lombard Street!!!

That's getting a little extreme now, isn't it?

I like the idea of experimenting with new things on the smart. I don't think it would be wise to replace it with something that would probably decrease the safety factor. I understand the need for more comfortable seats however. This is just my opinion and not everyone is going to agree with it and I understand. That's why we're here is to share ideas on different things and enjoy our smarts.

But on your thread I only posted jokingly saying why break it if it's fixed and then I was agreeing with someone about the warranty. I wasn't insulting your work personally. Keep it up.

Recaro Seats

The Recaro car seats 'sport' trendline is ideal for competitive drivers who make the highest demands on themselves, their cars and their car seats. Because the better you sit, the better and more concentrated your driving style, the quicker and more precise your reactions. The Recaro 'sport' trendline offers the highest degree of comfort and a maximum of ergonomic features.

I have had RECAROS in 2 of my previous cars and they have been a great improvement over the OEM stuff. They offer much more lateral support and can be bought with different style backs as well for more or less support. at 6'3" the Recaros are about the only seats that actually fit my torso length. They are probably the best seats made in Germany and are far better built than our wimpy smart seats. Unfortunately the airbag system is something I cannot just forgo and hope that since some old farts here ran around with no seat belts on their youth or helmets on their bikes.... nothing will happen to me.
How would you like to get into an accident and because you removed the seats with air bags your significant other has had a horrible accident on her side of the car!!! Its too much of a risk and I could not live with myself thinking "only if I had not taken the air bag seats out!"
