Removing interior door Card/panel

Various smart mod information sites detail how to install speakers by removing the outer door panel,

but has anyone tried to do the install speakers by removing the interior door card?

It must be possible cause people with custom interiors must of had it removed to get them recovered in custom fabric.

I saw them take apart a smart on one of those car customizing shows, I think it was West Coast Customs- Berlin. The outside skin of the door has to come off because it covers all the clips/ screws for the interior panel.
