Smart Towing your Boat

A relatively easy setup for towing your small boat (mine is a 12' Portabote that I'm too lazy to set up and take down, weighs about 100 lbs), follows:

U-Haul hitch # 29132, $250 installed. Clears DTH dual center tip exhaust if the LONG ball mount (from U-Haul) is used. U-Haul wired my smart for trailer hookup for $40. If they install their state of the art female wiring terminal (with led lights for insuring your circuits are functioning), you'll need their 3' wiring adapter to match your trailer's FLAT male terminal.

This is an 1 1/4" hitch.

HAUL-MASTER Boat Trailer with 8" Wheels and Tires (retailed by Harbor Freight, Item 5002-6VGA, $329). If bought from Harbor Freight, it may have to be "special ordered." Have the Harbor Freight store do the ordering and you'll pay no shipping charge. You get to assemble it.

1 7/8" ball.

The LONG ball mount has a 3 3/4" rise, which will be about right for the height of your boat trailer tongue.

I wish you fair winds and following seas.

Louis

Here is a picture of my smart towing my 17ft kayak. I had to have a custom made ball mount since my trailer needs a higher ball. I had a 12 inch raise made. Works great.

LOL The trailer weighs in at 150 lbs and the kayak weighs 42 lbs. Even with my wifes kayak (60 lbs) I am pulling an approximate total around 250 lbs. I bet a motorcycle, with a trailer, will weigh considerably more than my setup. I bet some motorcycles alone outweigh the smart.

Gargoyle,

You are my inspiration! I don't own a Smart Car but now to know that I can pull my kayak, it is back on my top 2 list! This is great, my kayak is 18ft at 48lbs. Thanks for paving the way.
