What kind of amps would do for the under-dash sub? Do I really need a 4 channel amp(MTX 704X) for the sub and the other speakers or would a 2 channel do? I don't think I'll ever get around to mounting rear speakers in the C pillars so I really don't want to buy an amp for that mod, just the sub, doors (Polk651's) and the dash tweeters.I might upgrade the doors to componates at some point but not for awhile.
I don't listen to hip-hop or hard rock,I like some older dance stuff;from when I was young and thin, but mostly Bossa Novas, and trip hop(think Geico caveman commercials) and spainish pop. I don't want to bounce down the street shatering windows from the bass.
I would take a four channel amp and configure it to run "3 channel". Use the front left and right channels for your door speakers and tweeters, then bridge the back channels for the subwoofers. This way you will get the most power to your woofer and have the most control over tuning and adjusting the system. Most high quality 4 channel amps allow you to do this and have built in electronic crossovers. Look at the Rockford P400.4 or T600.4. The 400 is plently of power for what you are doing and will easily fit under the seat. Check out Rockford Fosgate® - P400-4=
You want to wire the sub to use two channels and then one channel per speaker/component, which will use up all four. I have had my 704x for a long time now and it is wodnerful. No over heating issued and I always have enough power. Also fits perfectly under the passenger seat.
SunDiego, are you sure the 704x fits perfectly underneat the seat? Driver or passenger, and any mod to the carpeting? I see the dimension is 15" X 9", my profile amp is 11" X 10" and will not fit without cutting into the carpet. Even if one side is 9" instead of 10", it will not fit. Do you have any picture of the MTX in place?
Nonur, I would definitely do the 4 channels. The Pioneer components I got work nicely without an amp, but I would have to turn the volume as least 3/4 of the way up before I get the nice clarity.

Here's a picture,
My installer probably had to cut the carpet but either way it doesn't matter to me.
Thanks, yeah, he most likely had to cut the carpet.
The side of the amp closest to the rear of the car there is a litle lump in the carpet where it goes up about 1". There's no metal or anthing below it. He cut part of it off so that side of the amp had enough room to fit.
I am doing this on the sly (the other half has already said NO!)and I really don't want to pay $500.00 for the Rockford, but thanks for the info.I might just take it to a shop and have them do it the same day I have the new rims put on.
I won the 4smartcar under dash sub on E-Bay and will ask this one more time. I am going to get the MTX Thunder 704X amp that everyone seems to be using and would like to find some instructions for patching it into the factory system with some pretty pics and detailed, specific instructions for a smart. Please help! I have asked this more than a few times and get some great responses, but not with enough detail, and the other half found out so I want to try to save some money or if anyone in or around Chicago can point me to a decent and reasonablly priced install shop.............................please oh please
If you want to patch it in but get a cleaner output, try on of JL Audio's OEM interface units. I put one in our ford explorer when I installed a sub and it makes a night and day difference.
